Summary

Add PHP 8.6 to the PHPUnit CI matrix and align this repository with the other Ray packages (e.g. Ray.Di).

  • The PHPUnit job now calls the shared workflow ray-di/.github/.github/workflows/continuous-integration.yml@v1 (old_stable 8.0-8.5, current_stable 8.6).
  • The analysis tools (Psalm, PHPStan, PHPMD, PHP_CodeSniffer, doctrine/coding-standard, composer-require-checker) move from the root require-dev to vendor-bin/tools (bamarni/composer-bin-plugin). composer install still installs them and bin-links exposes them in vendor/bin/, so the static analysis and coding standards workflows are unchanged.

Why

The 8.6 job failed in composer update because vimeo/psalm (^5.0 || ^6.0) in the root require-dev does not allow PHP 8.6. The shared workflow installs dependencies with --no-plugins, so tools kept in vendor-bin/tools are not installed for the PHPUnit jobs. Psalm itself still runs only in the static analysis workflow, on PHP 8.4.

Notes

  • PHP 8.6 is not released yet (dev build). This PR will not be merged until GA. On GA day the version spec will be switched to the stable 8.6, CI will be re-run, and the PR will be merged once green.
  • Switching to the shared workflow adds lowest dependency and Windows jobs.

Walkthrough

The CI matrix now includes PHP 8.6. For that version, the workflow removes six static-analysis and coding-standard packages from development requirements without updating the lock file.

This change adds PHP 8.6 to the CI matrix as a blocking job while PHP 8.6 is still an unreleased nightly build. Unrelated nightly breakages could fail CI until GA, so either mark the job non-blocking for now or hold the merge until PHP 8.6 is released, as the author intends.

The build (ubuntu-latest, 8.6) job failed. The cause is dependency resolution, not this change: composer update could not resolve the root composer.json requirement vimeo/psalm (^5.0 || ^6.0) on PHP 8.6.0-dev (the latest Psalm, 6.20.x, only supports up to ~8.5.0). PHPUnit never ran. (Superseded: see the follow-up comment below.)

Set explicit read-only workflow permissions.

This workflow does not define a permissions block. It therefore inherits repository or organization defaults. If those defaults grant write access, the CI job has more GITHUB_TOKEN authority than required. Add a workflow-level permissions: contents: read policy.

vimeo/psalm does not allow PHP 8.6 yet, so composer update failed before
PHPUnit ran. The test job only needs phpunit, so drop the analysis tools
for 8.6 only.

I withdraw the earlier "waiting for Psalm" note. Psalm does not need to run on 8.6, and the PHPUnit job only needs phpunit.

This PR now calls the shared @v1 workflow and keeps the analysis tools (Psalm, PHPStan, PHPMD, PHP_CodeSniffer, coding standard, composer-require-checker) in vendor-bin/tools, so they are not installed for the PHPUnit jobs. Psalm still runs in the static analysis workflow on PHP 8.4.

Keep PHP 8.6 non-blocking until GA.

shivammathur/setup-php@v2 resolves 8.6 to a PHP 8.6.0-dev nightly build. The build job has no continue-on-error, and PHP setup runs before dependency installation and PHPUnit. A nightly failure can therefore block each push or pull request that triggers this workflow.

Align with the other Ray packages: the PHPUnit job now calls the shared
v1 workflow, which runs composer with --no-plugins, and the analysis
tools (Psalm, PHPStan, PHPMD, PHP_CodeSniffer, composer-require-checker)
live in vendor-bin/tools. composer install still installs them and links
them into vendor/bin for the static analysis and coding standards jobs.
This removes the PHP 8.6-only step that dropped them.
