Glitchy shadows on distant objects #1671

Open

Description

Game version: Master build 921

It seems there's a general problem with shadows appearing glitchy on distant object. It may be very subtle on most maps, but it's particularly noticeable on the trees in Castle map. I've also noticed that with every shadow quality setting increase in graphics settings, the more they look glitchy.

I remember it was also noticeable a bit back in RE 2.0.0, so I wonder if this is an engine issue.

Can you take a screenshot/video of the issue?

Note that there's no blending between directional shadow splits in Tesseract, so you will see a noticeable transition between shadow cascades when the camera moves or rotates.

Shadow split blending could be implemented with relative ease, but has a slight performance cost.

Unfortunately I couldn't record a video due to an issue on my end, so I took some screenshots on the same spots, as the glitches flicker with motion. You can also see them on the rock and the distant tower. This is with all graphics settings maxed out.

I also wonder if this could be a driver issue, because I've had an RX 580 for the last 7 years or so and I've tried RE 2.0 and 2.0.9/2.1 almost exclusively on Linux. In 2.0 this issue is mostly noticeable on distant objects in Torus Octavus map, though I remember trying 2.0 very briefly on Windows a few years ago and it seems the issue was absent there (AMD uses different OpenGL drivers on Windows and on Linux). Now I don't have Windows, so I can't check that myself. If you happen to have a non AMD GPU, maybe you can check if you have it?

Hmm i can't reproduce it here; which GPU are you running the game with?

Radeon RX 580 on Linux. As mentioned in my previous comment, I suspect it might be a driver issue (though I'm not sure at this point). What's your GPU + OS?
