• __version__ is 5.8.3 and __build__ is 0x050803.
• The changelog's Unreleased section becomes 5.8.3 (2026-11-03), with a one-line summary.

After merging, pushing the tag v5.8.3 runs the release workflow. It checks the tag against __version__, builds, waits for approval of the pypi environment, publishes to PyPI through trusted publishing and creates the GitHub release from this changelog section. If this merges on a later day, the date in the changelog heading needs updating before the tag.

Testing

• pytest with the CI test dependencies: 840 passed, 2 skipped on Python 3.12 and 3.14.
• blue, isort, flake8, mypy, pylint, doc8 and the Sphinx build are clean.
• A local dry run of the release build passes: tag check, sdist and wheel build, twine check --strict, and a clean install and import.
