🛠 Guidelines to remediate hardcoded secrets
- Understand the implications of revoking this secret by investigating where it is used in your code.
- Replace and store your secrets safely. Learn here the best practices.
- Revoke and rotate these secrets.
- If possible, rewrite git history. Rewriting git history is not a trivial act. You might completely break other contributing developers' workflow and you risk accidentally deleting legitimate data.
To avoid such incidents in the future consider
- following these best practices for managing and storing secrets including API keys and other credentials
- install secret detection on pre-commit to catch secret before it leaves your machine and ease remediation.
🦉 GitGuardian detects secrets in your source code to help developers and security teams secure the modern development process. You are seeing this because you or someone else with access to this repository has authorized GitGuardian to scan your pull request.

Review comments at @SW.Bitween.Api/Resources/Accounts/ForgotPassword.cs:
- Around line 35-52: Update ForgotPassword.Handle so unknown addresses await
equivalent account-independent database work before returning, reducing the
timing difference from the eligible-account path. Preserve the identical null
response for both outcomes and keep email delivery in SendInBackground.
- Around line 36-54: Serialize password-reset issuance in the flow that checks
and replaces links before sending mail. Use an account-scoped transaction or
lock to make the cooldown check, deletion, and insertion atomic; handle or retry
serialization conflicts before calling mail.SendInBackground.
Review comments at @SW.Bitween.Api/Resources/Accounts/Invite.cs:
- Around line 61-77: Update Invite.Handle to delete the existing invite link and
persist the replacement AccountLink within one database transaction, then commit
before calling SendAsync. Keep the email-sent status update and its subsequent
save after sending, so a failed replacement save preserves the old link and no
email is sent for an unpersisted token.
Review comments at @SW.Bitween.Api/Resources/Accounts/PasswordLink.cs:
- Around line 62-74: Update Handle to conditionally delete the specific link
identified by link.Id before changing the account, and reject the request if no
link was deleted. Run link consumption, the password update, and related
database changes in one transaction, committing only after they succeed.
Review comments at @SW.Bitween.Api/Services/AccountMail.cs:
- Around line 83-87: Update NativeSmtpHandler to apply a bounded cancellation
timeout to authentication, message sending, and disconnection, in addition to
the existing ConnectAsync timeout. Keep the timeout scoped per SMTP client and
preserve SendInBackground’s best-effort behavior without adding a queue.
Review comments at @SW.Bitween.Web/ClientApp/src/pages/auth/SetPassword.tsx:
- Line 64: Update the link-check failure handling in SetPassword so only
LINK_INVALID or a 4xx validation error shows the expired-or-already-used page;
for other readPasswordLink failures, display link.error.message and provide a
retry action.
Review comments at @SW.Bitween.Web/ClientApp/src/pages/team/AddMemberDialog.tsx:
- Around line 61-69: Disable the submit button in AddMemberDialog until
appConfig.data is available, preventing submission before the email/password
configuration is known. Keep the existing pending-state behavior unchanged.

Equalize the awaited work for unknown addresses.
ForgotPassword.Handle returns immediately after FirstOrDefaultAsync when no account exists. An eligible account instead awaits AnyAsync, ExecuteDeleteAsync, and SaveChangesAsync before returning. SendInBackground does not remove this database-work difference. Repeated requests can therefore reveal account existence through response timing, despite identical null responses. Make both outcomes await equivalent account-independent work before returning, while keeping email delivery in the background.

Serialize password-reset issuance per account.
Two simultaneous forgotPassword calls can both pass the one-minute query. The first call can then save a link, while the second call deletes that link, saves another link, and sends a second email. The first email then contains an unusable token because usePasswordLink looks up the deleted hash.
Wrap the existence check, delete, and insert in one account-scoped transaction or account-row lock. Handle or retry serialization conflicts before sending the email.

Commit the replacement invite before sending the email.
Invite.Handle deletes the old link, sends the email, and only then saves the new AccountLink. If the save fails, the old link is gone and PasswordLinks.FindAsync cannot find the emailed token's hash.
Saving before sending prevents an emailed unpersisted token, but it does not preserve the old link if the delete remains outside the save transaction. A transaction around the delete and insert must commit before SendAsync; a transaction that still sends mail before commit does not solve both failures.

Update Invite.Handle to delete the existing invite link and persist the
replacement AccountLink within one database transaction, then commit before
calling SendAsync. Keep the email-sent status update and its subsequent save
after sending, so a failed replacement save preserves the old link and no email

Consume the password link before changing the account.
FindAsync only reads the link. Two concurrent requests can both pass it, set the password, and save. The later save can overwrite the earlier password before either request deletes the link.
Delete the specific link conditionally before changing the account. Run the conditional delete and the password update in one database transaction. Otherwise, a failed update can consume the link without applying the password change.

Bound the SMTP send stages.
SendInBackground intentionally provides best-effort delivery, so losing an untracked message during shutdown is not a delivery defect. However, NativeSmtpHandler applies its timeout only to ConnectAsync. Authentication, SendAsync, and DisconnectAsync can retain each SmtpClient indefinitely.
The request limits are per client or account, not process-wide. For example, one authorized account can issue up to 600 requests per minute under the default limit, and each reachable password-change or notification path can start another SMTP client. A burst may therefore retain many clients and consume application resources.
Apply a cancellation timeout to all remaining SMTP stages. A bounded queue can be considered separately if stronger delivery or concurrency guarantees are required; it is not necessary to preserve the current best-effort behavior.

Skipping this one. MailKit's SmtpClient.Timeout (2 minutes by default) already bounds each network step after the connect: authenticate, send and disconnect. They don't hang indefinitely. This is also the shared Email-channel sender, which this PR doesn't change; a tighter limit there belongs in its own change.

Show a different message when the link check fails for reasons other than an invalid link.
Any failure of readPasswordLink takes the user to the "expired or already used" page. That includes a network error, a 5xx response, and a 429 rate-limit response. The user then requests a new link even though the current link may still be valid. Limit this branch to the LINK_INVALID error code, or a 4xx validation error. For other failures, show link.error.message and a retry action.

Disable submission until appConfig resolves.
Before appConfig.data resolves, the password radio and submit button remain available. A valid password can pass client validation and reach Create.Handle. When DisableEmailPasswordLogin is enabled, the handler ignores the supplied password, stores null, and creates the SSO-only account. The request skips the email notice because the client still sees passwordsOff as false.
The issue is not an empty password request. The server creates an account without a password. Disable the submit button until appConfig.data is available.
