A classic adapter that dotnet cannot start (wrong runtime, missing files) prints the reason on stderr without a log marker, and the host dropped it. The call only failed with "Received null data." and the reason was nowhere. Such lines are now logged as warnings under serverless.adapters.{id}.

Test: AdapterStderrTests starts a dll dotnet rejects and checks the reason is logged (fails without the fix).

📝 Summary

Summary

  • Log non-empty, unmarked adapter stderr lines as warnings under the adapter logger category. This preserves startup and runtime error text that the host previously dropped.
  • Document the behavior for Protocol 1.

Risk

risk:low. The change affects stderr handling for classic adapters. It does not change marked log lines or stdout handling.

Security-sensitive areas

  • No security-sensitive code or credentials are changed.
  • Adapter stderr is now included in warning logs. Review log access and retention if adapter output can contain sensitive data.

Test coverage impact

  • Add AdapterStderrTests to check that output from an invalid adapter DLL is logged under the adapter category.
  • Test results were not provided.

Operational concerns

  • No migration or deployment steps are indicated.
  • Warning logs may include previously hidden dotnet or runtime error text. No rollback-specific concerns are indicated.

The service now logs non-whitespace adapter stderr lines without recognized SDK log markers as warnings. A unit test checks the warning output, and the Protocol 1 documentation describes the behavior.

Log unmarked stderr lines

ErrorDataReceived logs unmarked stderr lines as warnings. The test checks the warning category and message. The Protocol 1 description documents the warning behavior.

Unmarked adapter startup errors are logged as warnings. The test could better verify the diagnostic text, but this does not block merging.

Assert that the warning contains the startup diagnostic.

The test checks only the category. A warning with no diagnostic message would still pass, although preserving dotnet's reason is the purpose of this change. Assert a stable part of the emitted message as well.
