Fixes #9287

What is changing

OllamaContainer used to add a GPU DeviceRequest automatically whenever docker info listed a runtime named nvidia. Docker Desktop (WSL2) registers an nvidia runtime even on machines without an NVIDIA GPU (e.g. AMD/Intel graphics), so container creation failed with nvidia-container-cli: WSL environment detected but no adapters were found.

This PR makes GPU access an explicit opt-in:

  • The OllamaContainer constructors no longer probe docker info and no longer add a DeviceRequest automatically.
  • A new OllamaContainer withGpuAccess() method adds the same DeviceRequest that was previously applied automatically (capabilities=gpu, count=-1), keeping the container's chaining style:
OllamaContainer ollama = new OllamaContainer("ollama/ollama")
    .withGpuAccess();

Migration note

This is a behavior change for users who relied on the automatic detection: if GPU access is needed, add a single .withGpuAccess() call to the container setup. Without it, the container now starts without GPU access, which also fixes startup on Docker Desktop/WSL2 hosts without NVIDIA GPUs.

Testing

  • Added OllamaContainerGpuTest, a unit test that does not start any container: it applies the registered create-command modifiers to a CreateContainerCmd and asserts that by default no DeviceRequest is present, and that after withGpuAccess() a single DeviceRequest with capabilities=gpu and count=-1 is added.
  • ./gradlew :testcontainers-ollama:test --tests "org.testcontainers.ollama.OllamaContainerGpuTest" passes; spotless, checkstyle, and javadoc for the module pass.

The approach was first proposed in #9287 (comment).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • GPU access is now opt-in for Ollama containers, rather than being requested automatically when an NVIDIA runtime is detected. Enable it with the new GPU access option.
  • Tests
    • Added coverage for the default GPU setting and opt-in configuration.

Walkthrough

OllamaContainer no longer requests GPU access based on Docker runtime information. Call withGpuAccess() to add a GPU device request. Tests check that GPU access is disabled by default and enabled after opting in.

Changes: Ollama GPU configuration

The constructor no longer checks for an NVIDIA runtime or adds a GPU request automatically. withGpuAccess() adds one GPU device request with count -1. Tests check the default configuration and the opt-in method’s return value and device request.

Explanation

Issue #9287 reports that OllamaContainer startup fails on a non-NVIDIA Windows host (Docker Desktop 4.34.2 adds an nvidia runtime to docker info). The reported failure comes from the automatic GPU DeviceRequest that the container applied when it found that runtime. The issue gives no further acceptance criteria. At head, OllamaContainer.java has no docker info probe and no automatic DeviceRequest in either constructor. The constructors only set the image name, assert compatibility, and expose port 11434. GPU access is added only by the new withGpuAccess() method, which sets a DeviceRequest with capabilities=gpu and count=-1. Default construction therefore no longer triggers the failing GPU path. OllamaContainerGpuTest.shouldNotRequestGpuAccessByDefault checks that no DeviceRequest is set by default. shouldRequestGpuAccessWhenOptedIn checks the opt-in case. The tests are unit tests and do not start a container, so the end-to-end startup on a non-NVIDIA host is verified by reasoning and the author's reported runs, not by a container start in this review. The change to withGpuAccess() also changes default behavior for existing users who relied on automatic GPU access. The PR description documents this migration note.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The PR changes two files: OllamaContainer.java and the new OllamaContainerGpuTest.java. Both changes relate to #9287. The OllamaContainer.java change removes the automatic docker info runtime probe and DeviceRequest. It adds the opt-in withGpuAccess() method and updates the class Javadoc to describe opt-in GPU access. The test class covers the default and opt-in behavior. Its reflection access to the private createContainerCmdModifiers field of GenericContainer is test support for the requirement and does not add unrelated behavior. No unrelated functional changes were found in the reviewed summary or in the inspected files.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 0.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 1 functions across 2 files.

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.
