Acer Aspire AV16-71P (Arrow Lake, ARL): No SoundWire machine driver found (RT712-only link 0 config, internal speakers/mic/headset jack missing) #5891
Internal speakers, headset jack and DMICs do not work on this laptop. Only HDMI outputs (from the Intel HDMI codec) are exposed by PipeWire/ALSA; Bluetooth audio works fine since it does not depend on the DSP.
The kernel reports No SoundWire machine driver found and falls back to skl_hda_dsp_generic with the HDMI-only topology, so the Realtek RT712 (jack/speaker/mic) on SoundWire link 0 is never instantiated.
This looks similar to #4923 (Swift Go 14, MTL), but on Arrow Lake, and with only the RT712 reported on link 0 — no separate amplifier codec is reported by ACPI.
I checked current upstream:
commit 242200c ("ASoC: soc-acpi-intel-arl-match: add rt712_l0_rt1320_l3 support", in v7.1) adds an ARL entry for RT712-l0, but it requires an RT1320 on link 3 (arl_rt712_l0_rt1320_l3) plus the snd_soc_acpi_intel_sdca_is_device_rt712_vb() machine check. This machine reports no device on link 3.
The referenced topology sof-arl-rt712-l0-rt1320-l3.tplg is not present in sof-bin (checked up to v2.14.3) either.
So this specific configuration (ARL + RT712 on link 0 only + PCH DMICs + iDISP HDMI) appears to be unsupported so far. Could a match entry + topology be added for it (analogous to what was done for MTL in #4923)? Happy to test any patch/topology.

Notes:
The SoundWire slave on link 0: mfg_id 0x025d (Realtek), part_id 0x0712 (RT712), version 0x3.
I don't know whether this RT712 is the SDCA "VB" variant; nothing probes it today due to the fallback. Can test/check on request.
Willing to provide acpidump, full dmesg, alsa-info snapshot, NHLT dump or test kernel/topology builds.
I verified that the patched snd_soc_acpi_intel_match module was loaded (srcversion 3E2F7F7FA6CEEDF9A013E37). The result was still:
acpi device:2d: SDCA function UAJ (type 6) at 0x1
acpi device:2e: SDCA function SmartAmp (type 1) at 0x4
sof-audio-pci-intel-mtl 0000:00:1f.3: No SoundWire machine driver found for the ACPI-reported configuration:
sof-audio-pci-intel-mtl 0000:00:1f.3: link 0 mfg_id 0x025d part_id 0x0712 version 0x3
The reason seems to be this line in the new entry:
SDCA_QUIRKS_RT712_VB requires a SDCA_FUNCTION_TYPE_SMART_MIC function, but this laptop's RT712 exposes only UAJ + SmartAmp. The laptop uses two PCH DMICs instead, matching the purpose of this new entry.
Diagnostic test without the gate
I rebuilt the same patch with only the .machine_check line removed. No other PR behavior was changed. This works:
device 0: Jack Out
device 1: Jack In
device 2: Speaker
device 5/6/7: HDMI1/2/3
device 10: DMIC Raw
device 31: Deepbuffer Jack Out
PipeWire selects Arrow Lake cAVS Speaker, and internal-speaker playback was tested and heard clearly. It also exposes the PCH digital microphone and headset microphone.
Could the snd_soc_acpi_intel_sdca_is_device_rt712_vb check be removed from this new link-0-only entry, or replaced with a check that accepts this RT712 UAJ + SmartAmp / PCH-DMIC configuration?
Oh, and thank you very much for your work!
It is the first time that I hear sound from this notebook without connecting a bluetooth headphone first, which wouldn't be possible without your work.
ALSA exposes the expected playback devices, including Jack Out, Speaker, three HDMI devices, and Deepbuffer Jack Out. The previous No SoundWire machine driver found failure is gone.
Internal speakers and the microphone both are working.
The updated PR works correctly on this machine.
Yes, you may add my Tested-by tag to the patch. Thank you!
@pdaether Can you share your Tested-by tag? I can't find your email from github.
Tested-by: Patrick Daether daether@pd-digital.de
Tested on an Intel Tiger Lake laptop running Ubuntu 22.04. The audio playback issue is completely resolved by this patch.
@pdaether Sorry, could you test the updated PR again? I made some change to make the code more generic. Otherwise, it will impact all devices that with rt712 on link 0.
I retested the latest PR #5901 revision at commit 9b91e67 on the same Acer Aspire AV16-71P.
The expected patched module was loaded, the RT712 link-0 machine matched, and the previous No SoundWire machine driver found error did not occur. SOF loaded the expected function topologies:
I can confirm that the final PR revision also works on Arch Linux.
Test environment:
Base kernel package: linux 7.2.3.arch1-3
Custom kernel release: 7.2.3-arch1-3.1-acer-rt712
SOF firmware: sof-firmware 2025.12.2-1
linux-firmware: 20260810-2
PipeWire: 1.6.8
WirePlumber: 0.5.17
Secure Boot: disabled
I rebuilt the official Arch linux package with commit 9b91e670bd3fa6c98b35666ccaffc0882614e507 applied. Since the Linux 7.2 source already contains rt712_0_agg_adr, only the 16-line patch from that commit was needed.
The patched kernel boots successfully.
This confirms the same patch works with the Arch Linux 7.2 kernel configuration and packaging, in addition to the previous Ubuntu test.

@pdaether Can you try #5901? And please share the full dmesg log.
