What does this PR do?

Passes -Xlinker -u -Xlinker _main when linking app extensions, so the linker keeps the extension's code.

An extension's entry point is Foundation's _NSExtensionMain (-e _NSExtensionMain), so nothing references the extension's own main. With dead stripping, the linker then drops the @main type and everything reachable only from it: the example widget from Appex.md came out with no __text section at all, only __stubs and __got. Such a binary cannot work, and it also fails to sign: zsign computes the room left for LC_CODE_SIGNATURE from the offset of __text, finds none, and stops with "Can't find free space of LoadCommands for CodeSignature!".

Keeping -e _NSExtensionMain and only forcing _main to stay matters: #313 reports that dropping the custom entry point instead keeps the code but crashes in ExtensionFoundation at launch.

The linker flags of each product are now exposed as Plan.Product.linkerFlags (the generated Package.swift text is derived from it) so that they can be unit tested. Applications are unchanged.

How was it tested?

  • swift build --product xtool and swift test on Linux (Podman, Swift 6.4, XTL_CI=1): Test run with 16 tests in 0 suites passed, including the new appExtensionKeepsMainSymbolDespiteForeignEntryPoint and applicationDoesNotForceMainSymbol.
  • SwiftLint 0.65.1 --strict: 0 violations.
  • Real build on Linux with a Darwin SDK from Xcode 27.1: xtool new Hello plus the widget from Appex.md, in debug and release. The extension now contains its code (__text of 0x1a88 bytes, the HelloWidget symbols, 132 KB binary) and signs (ad hoc, with entitlements). Before the change it had only __stubs and __got, and signing failed with the error above.
  • Same fix in a production Tauri app with a WidgetKit extension, built on Linux: installed on an iPhone (iOS 27) with xtool install, and accepted by App Store Connect (TestFlight build VALID) with the Linux-built app and extension binaries.

Fixes the first point of #313 (empty .appex). Related: xtool-org/zsign#2 and xtool-org/zsign#5, the zsign side of the same signing error.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved app extension linking by preserving required entry points, helping extensions launch as expected. Applications continue to use their existing linker behavior.
  • Documentation
    • Clarified that extensions must provide a main entry point, such as through a @main type or top-level code.

The extension entry point is Foundation's _NSExtensionMain, so nothing
references the extension's own main and the linker dead-strips the
whole @main (including the example in Appex.md). The binary ends up
with no __text, which zsign then refuses to sign. Force the symbol to
stay with -u _main.

📝 Walkthrough

Plan.Product now provides linker flags for applications and app extensions. App extensions retain _main while using _NSExtensionMain as their entry point. Tests verify the flags, and the extension guide documents the main requirement.

linkerFlags supplies product-specific flags, and linkerSettings serializes them into unsafe flags. Tests check app-extension entry-point and _main flags, and confirm applications do not receive -u. The guide describes the required main definition for extensions.

Assert the complete extension entry-point flag sequence.

flags.contains("_NSExtensionMain") can pass when _NSExtensionMain is not the operand of -Xlinker -e. Use the Collection.contains overload with the complete sequence:

Suggested fix
- #expect(flags.contains("_NSExtensionMain"))
+ #expect(flags.contains(["-Xlinker", "-e", "-Xlinker", "_NSExtensionMain"]))

The project requires Swift 6.2. The overload accepts a collection and checks for the elements as an ordered contiguous sequence, so this assertion compiles and detects the regression.

Hi @kabiroberai, I opened a series of PRs that let xtool build, sign and upload an App Store build from Linux (validated end to end: builds accepted by App Store Connect and installed through TestFlight). They are independent and small first: #320, #321, #322, then #323, #324, #327; #325 and #326 wait on xtool-org/AssetKit#2 and xtool-org/zsign#3-5. Could you approve the workflows when you have a moment? Happy to split, squash or rework anything.

Reviewed statically (diff + PackLib sources; no Swift toolchain on this machine, so I'm going off the code and your test/build notes in the description, not a local run).

The diagnosis looks right, and the choice of fix matters. With -e _NSExtensionMain nothing in the extension references its own main, so dead stripping removes the @main type and everything only reachable from it — the "no __text at all" observation plus the zsign LC_CODE_SIGNATURE failure is a consistent story. Forcing _main to stay with -u while keeping the Foundation trampoline as the entry point also matches what #313 found about dropping -e: it keeps the runtime path that ExtensionFoundation expects. That's the right side of the trade-off to be on.

Things I verified:

  • Plan.ProductType only has application and appExtension cases (Planner.swift:341-344), so the switch in linkerFlags is exhaustive — there's no framework/dylib product kind where -u/-e could accidentally leak. Applications still get only the rpath (Packer.swift:238-240), so no duplicate-main concerns there.
  • The refactor into linkerFlags is what makes the two tests meaningful; appExtensionKeepsMainSymbolDespiteForeignEntryPoint checks the exact -Xlinker -u -Xlinker _main subsequence, and applicationDoesNotForceMainSymbol guards the negative case. Both construct Plan.Product directly via the @testable memberwise init, so they should compile as written.
  • The generated Package.swift quoting is safe for these flags — no embedded quotes in any flag value.

Two concerns and a nit:

  1. -u _main makes "the extension product doesn't define main" a hard link error (undefined _main) where previously it was silently fine. That's arguably an improvement — failing loudly beats shipping an empty .appex — but the PR doesn't state the expectation for extension targets that use NSExtensionPrincipalClass without any @main/top-level code. Does xtool require every extension product to be a SwiftPM executable (so main always exists), or should this be documented as a new requirement? Worth a sentence somewhere (Appex.md or the code comment).

  2. #321 ("pass -isysroot to clang when linking") also refactors the same Plan.Product.linkerSettings property and its call site in build(). The fixes are semantically independent, but whichever lands second is going to need a rebase over a guaranteed textual conflict in Packer.swift. Flagging mainly so maintainers sequence them consciously.

  3. Nit: the tests cover linkerFlags but not the string the generator actually emits — the map { "\"\($0)\"" } interpolation in linkerSettings (Packer.swift:256-257) is only covered indirectly by your real builds. A one-line expectation that the emitted Swift source contains the quoted -u/_main pair would pin the escaping too.

The validation in the description is unusually thorough for this repo — TestFlight VALID plus a device install is well beyond what most fix PRs carry. Left as-is, this is a clear improvement; the principal-class case in point 1 is the only thing I'd want an answer on before merge.

The -u _main flag makes an undefined main a link error. The builder's
executable target only has an empty stub.c, so main must come from the
extension's own library. Note it in Appex.md and next to the flag, and
assert the emitted Package.swift snippet carries the quoted pair.

Thanks. On point 1: extension products are always plain .library products (Planner only accepts auto-library products), and the Packer wraps each one in a generated executable target whose only source is an empty stub.c. So main does not come from xtool: it has to come from the extension's own library, via @main or top-level code. With -u _main, a library that only provides an NSExtensionPrincipalClass and no main now fails at link time with an undefined _main, where it used to produce an extension with no code that could not be signed. I documented this in Appex.md and next to the flag in Packer.swift. On point 3: I added an expectation that the emitted Package.swift snippet contains the quoted "-u", "-Xlinker", "_main" pair. Both are in 7bacde1. Noted on the merge order with #321.
