Brief, concise description of the change:

A summary payload can now carry backfill: {"from": ..., "until": ...}, and the summary job then computes every closed window of that range oldest first, through the same computeWindow and the same SQL the scheduled run uses, under the same keys (so a second backfill writes the same objects again). One invocation stops while at least 30 seconds, or twice its slowest window, remain and answers with next, the payload that carries on from the following window. The caller invokes again with it. The function never invokes itself, because that would need a new IAM grant and an asynchronous invocation that Lambda retries twice with nobody watching. rainlytics backfill <question> <hourly|daily> --from ... [--until ...] reads the question's schedule for the target function and payload, prints the window count and minimum Athena charge, and invokes synchronously until no next comes back. A deployment needs this release deployed once, and after that a backfill needs nothing redeployed. The new CLI calls are scheduler:GetSchedule and lambda:InvokeFunction (both per-request, and both made by whoever runs the command), with @aws-sdk/client-lambda and @aws-sdk/client-scheduler added at the version the other clients resolve to. docs/summary-schedule/ now says how to backfill summaries and then reports, in that order, including the raw aws lambda invoke route. computeWindow moved to src/functions/summary-window.ts to keep rollup-summary.ts under the FTA cap. Nothing here touches the rollup request, the row conditions or the rollup CLI options, which #207 is changing.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added a rainlytics backfill command for regenerating missing hourly or daily summaries over a specified date range.
    • Backfills process completed windows chronologically, support continuation across multiple invocations, and provide progress and estimated query-cost details.
    • Reports can be regenerated after missing summaries become available.
  • Documentation

    • Added guidance for backfill usage, required permissions, recovery workflows, date ranges, continuation behavior, costs, and report recomputation.

A summary payload can now carry `backfill: {from, until}`. The job then
computes every closed window of that range, oldest first, through the
same `computeWindow` the scheduled run uses, and writes the same keys.

One invocation stops before its timeout and answers with the payload
that carries on from the next window. `rainlytics backfill` reads the
question's schedule for its function and payload, adds the range, and
invokes until no `next` comes back.

Closes #200.

📝 Walkthrough

The change adds a rainlytics backfill command and summary-function support for recomputing closed windows in a specified range. The function processes windows sequentially and can return continuation progress. Documentation describes the required permissions and the order for restoring summaries and reports.

Changes: Summary Backfill

Layer / File(s) Summary
Range validation and window selection
src/summary-backfill.ts, src/functions/summary-backfill-input.ts, src/summary-backfill.test.ts
Backfill ranges use inclusive start and exclusive end instants. The code validates payload ranges and selects overlapping, closed windows in oldest-first order. Tests cover partial windows, open windows, empty ranges, and a 31-day hourly range.
Summary computation and continuation
src/functions/summary-backfill-run.ts, src/functions/summary-window.ts, src/functions/rollup-summary.ts, src/functions/rollup-summary.test.ts
The summary handler supports scheduled runs and backfills. Backfills compute windows sequentially and return continuation progress when remaining invocation time is limited. Per-window computation runs Athena, loads visitor data, and writes the summary. Tests cover repeated runs, continuation, and invalid ranges.
CLI invocation and recovery documentation
src/cli/backfill-*, src/cli/command.ts, src/cli/backfill-command.test.ts, package.json, docs/command-line/README.md, docs/summary-schedule/README.md, docs/reports/README.md
The CLI validates request arguments, looks up the schedule target, invokes the summary Lambda through continuation payloads, and reports progress and estimated Athena costs. Integration tests cover successful runs and errors. The documentation describes permissions and summary-then-report recovery.

The backfill feature works as described. Two CLI edge cases need cleanup: impossible dates in full-timestamp form silently shift the range, and a CLI run against a function that has not been redeployed fails with an unhelpful error. Both are small fixes and safe to follow up.

Explanation

The description explains the implementation, CLI behavior, permissions, documentation, issue scope, and deployment requirements. It includes the required checklist, issue reference, documentation confirmation, and validation claim.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue [#200] is directly linked and open. The PR adds bounded backfill input, computes closed windows oldest first through backfillWindows and computeWindow, preserves scheduled computation and object-key behavior, returns continuation payloads before timeout, and adds synchronous CLI invocation. Tests cover window selection, repeated writes, continuation, invalid input, CLI validation, invocation failures, and reporting. Documentation covers summary backfills before reports, including the direct Lambda route. These changes satisfy the coding requirements in [#200].

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changed files support [#200]. The CLI, AWS clients, request validation, progress reporting, runtime backfill logic, tests, documentation, and computeWindow extraction implement or verify the requested backfill behavior. No unrelated rollup request, row-condition, or rollup CLI option changes are reported. The excluded pnpm-lock.yaml is not needed to establish scope compliance.

Docstring coverage is 93.75% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 16 functions across 15 files. (4 skipped: 4 unsupported.)

valid-response return path.

Review comments at @src/cli/backfill-request.ts:
- Around line 112-117: Extend the date validation near the instant parsing check
to reject impossible calendar dates for both day-only and instant forms. Derive
the YYYY-MM-DD portion from text, parse it as a UTC calendar date, and require
the normalized UTC date to match that portion alongside the existing instant

An instant such as 2026-02-30T06:00Z rolled on into March. The date part
is now checked in both forms. A function deployed before backfills answers
null, and the command now says to deploy RollupSummaries first.
