  • A subscription's advisory lock lives only as long as the database session that took it, but the event store only noticed a lost lock when the whole lock connection pool died. A lock session ending while the pool survived (a terminated backend, a failover, a network drop the pool reconnects from) went unnoticed.
  • The subscription kept processing events with no lock held, so the next node retrying the lock took it too and both processed every event. Event handlers ran twice and process managers dispatched their commands twice, appending duplicate events for a single source event when the command was not idempotent.
  • Nothing was logged when this happened, so the only symptom was duplicated work showing up downstream.
  • Telling the subscription about the lost lock sends it back to retrying, which is the same recovery it already gets when the pool itself goes down.

PR Summary

High Risk
Changes subscription exclusivity and lock lifecycle on DB reconnects; incorrect session/verification logic could cause false lock loss or leave stale locks, with duplicate or missed event processing.

Overview
Fixes a case where subscription advisory locks were tied to a Postgres session, but the event store only treated locks as lost when the whole lock pool died. After a backend termination or reconnect on the same pool, subscribers could keep processing without a lock while another node acquired it—causing duplicate event handling.

Advisory lock tracking now records the holding session (pg_backend_pid + a stable eventstore.session_id custom setting) when acquiring locks, and the advisory-lock GenServer registers as a Postgrex connection listener for connect/disconnect. On disconnect it notifies owners with lock_released, logs a warning, and reconciles state on reconnect via session verification (with retries when verification queries fail). Startup forces a fresh connection so early connects can deliver notices; Config.add_connection_listener wires the listener safely.

Subscriptions get the same recovery path as a full pool shutdown—retry and resend in-flight events—when only the lock session ends.

Walkthrough

Advisory locks now record the PostgreSQL session that acquired each lock. Connection notifications and process monitors trigger session checks, lost-lock notifications, and retries for queued releases. The supervisor registers a connection listener. Tests cover reconnect handling and subscription event redelivery after lock-session termination.

Layer / File(s) Summary
Session identity and lock acquisition
lib/event_store/sql/statements*, lib/event_store/storage/{session,lock}.ex, lib/event_store/advisory_locks.ex, test/storage/lock_test.exs
SQL statements return backend PID and session ID. Storage code builds session values and returns them when it acquires an exclusive session lock. Advisory locks store the returned session.
Connection events and lock verification
lib/event_store/{config,supervisor,advisory_locks}.ex, test/config_test.exs, test/advisory_locks_test.exs, test/subscriptions/subscription_locking_test.exs
The advisory-lock connection registers a listener. Connection events trigger session verification, lost-lock notifications, and retries for queued releases. Tests cover connection loss, reconnection, and event redelivery after lock-session termination.

When after_connect runs SET ROLE to a role that cannot see the session's own backend_start, such as a schema owner role, the lock server crashes on every lock it acquires and the migration lock raises, where main works. The inline comment has the details and a proposal.

My runs of the #330 and #331 scripts against this head (36afae1) are in commanded/eventstore#330. The full suite passes in two runs (497 passed, 14 excluded), and each of these changes makes at least one of the new tests in advisory_locks_test.exs fail: removing the connection :DOWN clause, not unlocking a lock reported lost while its session lives, treating every lock as lost after a reconnect.

Thanks for the quick fix. At 83dad02 the store with SET ROLE pg_signal_backend in after_connect subscribes and its lock server keeps running, and the migration lock returns :ok with the same after_connect. The three new tests fail at 36afae1 with the FunctionClauseError in Session.new/2 and pass here.

The full suite passes in two runs (500 passed, 14 excluded). The #330 script gives the same result as at 36afae1: the locks are reported lost within milliseconds of the disconnect and the other node takes both. Two small test notes are inline.

The session identity reads pg_stat_activity, which hides backend_start from a role switched to with SET ROLE, so a lock connection whose after_connect switches role cannot take a single lock.

This PR adds session-aware advisory lock tracking so subscriptions can recover when a database session ends while its connection pool survives, reducing duplicate event processing.

Changes:

  • Track database session identity alongside acquired locks.
  • Handle connection notifications and worker exits, notify lock owners, and log lock loss.
  • Add coverage for reconnection, worker crashes, role switching, and subscription recovery.

🔵 Needs a closer look

Concurrency-sensitive recovery needs human validation and PostgreSQL integration coverage, particularly for query failures that leave sessions connected.

… a reconnect query fails

A replacement connection can announce itself before the old one goes down, which drops the old monitor and leaves verification as the only path that can discover a lost lock. A failed verification with no pending unlocks was not retried, so an owner could keep processing without its lock.
