fix(mcp): stop leaking exception text from /mcp/tools/{id}/invoke - #244
The legacy REST route POST /mcp/tools/{service_id}/invoke (gateway/app/routers/mcp.py) put str(exc) into HTTP error bodies and into isError tool results. This PR does the same thing for that route that #242 does for the JSON-RPC paths:
Callers get a fixed message (_invoke_public_message). Gateway refusal codes like quote_expired, jev_risk_review_required and permit_wallet_mismatch still pass through. They are the public contract, not exception text: only snake_case tokens raised as GovernedToolError/PermissionError pass. Free text, and anything a tool raised, maps to a canned message.
The real error is logged on the server (mcp_invoke_error surface=... request_id=... class=... error=...).
Request id: X-Request-ID when it matches ^[A-Za-z0-9._-]{1,64}$, otherwise uuid4().hex. It comes back as detail.request_id on HTTP errors and as structuredContent.request_id on isError results.
Contract changes
Some error detail values that were bare strings (for example "quote_already_consumed" and "jev_risk_review_required") are now {"error": ..., "request_id": ...}.
Replays of a refusal are identical except for request_id, which is per response. The replay tests now compare with request_id removed.
Tests that asserted tool exception text ("tool blew up" and "insufficient_funds") reached the caller now assert that it does not.
The _public_jsonrpc_error helper from #242 is not on origin/main, so this PR adds its own small helpers (_invoke_request_id, _invoke_public_message, _invoke_log_error), placed beside the invoke route. The two PRs do not touch the same hunks, but the request-id regex and the id logic are duplicated. Whichever PR merges second can fold them into one helper.
Tests
New gateway/tests/test_mcp_invoke_error_exposure.py uses AMW fixtures only.
Updated the existing invoke tests for the new shape.
Full gateway suite: 6032 passed, 102 skipped. ruff check and ruff format are clean on the changed files.
Medium Risk
Changes the public error contract on a live invoke route (body shapes and canned messages), which can break clients that parsed raw exception text, but reduces leakage of upstream payloads and tool secrets.
Overview Hardens the deprecated POST /mcp/tools/{service_id}/invoke route so clients never see raw str(exc) from tools or unexpected exceptions—matching the JSON-RPC behavior from #242.
Adds tool_originated on GovernedToolError (including replay paths with reason_code: tool_execution_failed) so tool-raised text is always mapped to tool_execution_failed, while gateway refusal codes in REFUSAL_REASON_CODES / _INVOKE_PUBLIC_REASONS still pass through unchanged.
New invoke helpers _invoke_public_message, _invoke_log_error, and _invoke_request_id replace exception strings in HTTP detail and isError bodies with canned messages, whitelist extra_data (e.g. drops upstream_result), and attach X-Request-ID (validated header or fresh uuid) without putting the id in the body so idempotent error replays stay byte-identical.
Tests assert markers stay out of responses, logging only records exception class under the request id, and several existing invoke tests expect tool_execution_failed instead of tool-specific text.

The MCP invoke route now logs exception classes with validated or generated request IDs and returns sanitized public messages. Tool-originated failures map to tool_execution_failed. Governed errors retain receipts and expose only allowlisted extra data. Applicable error responses include an X-Request-ID header while retaining specified status codes and response data. Tests cover error responses, request-ID handling, logging, and replay behavior.
The route can retain caller-controlled sensitive values in logs, and the required formatting gate still needs verification before merge.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to a37ee
The change reduces client-visible error leakage without changing invocation authority or billing ownership. A remaining concern is that caller-supplied request identifiers are copied into server logs. Their format is restricted, but sensitive token content is not redacted.
Retained concerns
Medium · security · observed: The new error logger copies caller-selected X-Request-ID content into server log events. Length and character validation prevent multiline injection but do not prevent credential-shaped or otherwise sensitive values from crossing into the logging boundary. This is the retained exposure finding; the demonstrated scope is caller-supplied metadata, not disclosure of independently obtained server secrets.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The introduced exposure is bounded to accepted caller metadata entering the gateway's error-log stream when a handled failure occurs. The source does not establish broader tenant, wallet, credential, or tool authority. Exposure beyond that stream depends on production log collection, access, and retention, which were not supplied.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
observed — The retained finding follows X-Request-ID through syntax validation into logger.error without content redaction. A caller reaching a handled error branch can select the logged token. The inspected configuration provides no request-ID redactor, although downstream production controls remain unknown.
observed — JSON-RPC governed errors still serialize exception text, and unclassified REST failures still use traceback logging that can contain exception text. Both mechanisms existed at the comparison base; the reviewed changes do not establish increased reachability or exposure for them, so they are not retained as new PR architecture concerns.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The changed REST projection distinguishes tool-originated text from gateway reasons, filters governed extra-data keys, and preserves signed receipts. The request identifier is transport correlation metadata rather than an input to governed request identity: normalize_request continues to receive request_id=None.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — The origin marker changes public error projection rather than ownership of financial or execution state. Comparison and transition tracing found no changes to authorization, charging, refund, reservation release, terminal receipts, operation-keyed retry, or replay identity. Cancellation-specific behavior was not demonstrated, but no changed cancellation transition was identified.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Use a server-generated identifier for durable error correlation and treat any caller identifier as separate, untrusted metadata subject to an explicit logging policy. This would preserve correlation without relying on character validation to establish that caller content is non-sensitive.

Distinguish governed tool failures from gateway refusal codes
When a permit-bound local tool raises an exception whose message matches the snake_case regex, its exception text still reaches the caller. The local execution failure handler wraps str(exc) in GovernedToolError after refunding the charge, so checking that wrapper type does not establish that the message originated from the gateway. For example, a tool raising RuntimeError("secret_api_key_abc123") produces that exact public error, including on replay through _raise_replayed_error. Preserve the distinction between tool failures and gateway refusals when wrapping and replaying errors, and always map tool-originated failures to a canned message.

Codex review of #244 (invoke error exposure) at ad90db6.
The direction is right. _invoke_public_message (gateway/app/routers/mcp.py:4671-4692) stops echoing str(exc) and maps errors to canned messages or reason codes, and _invoke_log_error keeps the real error server-side under a request_id.
Findings
High: upstream payload still reaches the client (mcp.py:4874). detail.update(exc.extra_data) copies upstream_result: terminal_payload (built at mcp.py:3526-3529) into the 4xx/5xx body. When the upstream fails, that payload is exactly the kind of internal text this PR is meant to hide. Allowlist the extra_data keys that are public (dispatch metadata, refund_reconciliation), or sanitize upstream_result.
Medium: snake_case passthrough (mcp.py:4683-4686). Any GovernedToolError or PermissionError whose text matches the reason-code regex is passed through verbatim. Restrict the passthrough to the known REFUSAL_REASON_CODES / _INVOKE_PUBLIC_REASONS set rather than to a text shape.
Medium: replay body drift (mcp.py:4867, detail["request_id"] = rid). A fresh request_id goes into every error body, so an idempotent replay is no longer byte-identical. The modified replay tests (test_mcp_permit_denial_replay.py, test_cross_tenant_refusal_replay.py, test_jev_risk_guard.py) now drop request_id before comparing, which hides the regression. Put the id in a response header instead, or persist it with the idempotent outcome.
Low:_invoke_log_error (mcp.py:4695) logs raw exception text. That is fine server-side, but the new test asserts password-shaped text in the log. Consider redacting it.
Medium (real-data rule):gateway/tests/test_mcp_invoke_error_exposure.py:48 commits "X-API-Key": "test-key", and the file also has fixed IDs and a password-like string. Generate them per run (secrets.token_urlsafe(), uuid4()).

- GovernedToolError carries tool_originated; tool exception text maps to tool_execution_failed
- replace the snake_case passthrough with an explicit allowlist of gateway reason codes
- expose only dispatch and refund_reconciliation from extra_data; upstream_result stays server-side
- move request_id to the X-Request-ID response header so replay bodies stay byte-identical; restore replay assertions

Change list at f391244 (fix commit 6ea8b50, then origin/main merged in):
GovernedToolError now carries tool_originated; a tool's own exception text maps to tool_execution_failed on /mcp/tools/{id}/invoke, including idempotent replays.
The snake_case passthrough regex is gone. Only an explicit allowlist of gateway reason codes is echoed; anything else gets the canned message.
extra_data is filtered to dispatch and refund_reconciliation; upstream_result stays server-side.
request_id moved out of the body into the X-Request-ID response header, so a replayed body is byte-identical to the original. Replay assertions in the cross-tenant, Jev risk, permit denial, upstream governed, budget drift and write contention tests are restored.
Tests read the API key from VALID_API_KEYS instead of a hard-coded string.
The 8 targeted test files pass before and after the merge (178 passed).

Exercise persisted replay for the tool-error path.
test_identical_errors_replay_byte_identical sends two unkeyed requests. The patched mcp_router._mcp_adapter.invoke raises independently on each request, so the assertion does not test persisted replay or single execution.
test_mcp_permit_denial_replay.py already covers keyed replay and byte-identical bodies for another error path. Keep this test only if it is intended to cover tool-error sanitization on replay. Use registered_tool, send the same key twice, and assert one execution and identical response bodies. The direct _raise_replayed_error test does not replace this route-level coverage.

Delta review ad90db6..f391244 (codex, static; suite not run).
Resolved from prior FAIL: #1 extra-data filtering (gateway/app/routers/mcp.py:4734), #2 reason allowlist (mcp.py:4718), #3 byte-identical replay assertions restored (gateway/tests/test_mcp_permit_denial_replay.py:102). Merge of main has a clean remerge-diff.
Blocking:
Regression: mcp.py:4767 adds a required http_response parameter, but gateway/tests/test_action_invocation.py:129 doesn't pass it (signature check: "missing a required argument: 'http_response'"). Update the caller.
Invented test data (prior #5 not resolved): _api_key() still uses the hard-coded test-key from gateway/tests/conftest.py:202, and the delta adds hard-coded identities at gateway/tests/test_framework_client_contracts.py:20 and gateway/tests/test_script_credential_transport.py:173. Generate them per run and reuse them in assertions.
gateway/docs/schema-054-rollout.md:21 says revoking scrypt rows allows downgrade, but revoked rows keep their long hashes, so narrowing key_hash to 64 chars still fails. Drop revocation as a prep step.
(P3) Prior #4 still open: mcp.py:4745 logs raw exception text without redaction.
CI: failing (Python 3.11-3.14 / gateway, lint, CI result).
Drop raw exception text from mcp_invoke_error logs, keep the demo
auto-mint authority_required refusal fields on the REST invoke route,
and pass the new http_response argument in the direct invoke_tool test.

_invoke_request_id returns a caller-supplied X-Request-ID unchanged when it matches the length and character pattern. _invoke_log_error then writes that value to the application log through logger.error. A caller can place a credential-like string in this header, and the gateway stores it in logs that other parties can read. The gateway does not redact the field. Free text, and anything a tool raised, maps to a canned message.mcp_invoke_error surface=... request_id=... class=... error=...).X-Request-IDwhen it matches^[A-Za-z0-9._-]{1,64}$, otherwiseuuid4().hex. It comes back asdetail.request_idon HTTP errors and asstructuredContent.request_idonisErrorresults.Contract changes
detailvalues that were bare strings (for example"quote_already_consumed"and"jev_risk_review_required") are now{"error": ..., "request_id": ...}.request_id, which is per response. The replay tests now compare withrequest_idremoved."tool blew up"and"insufficient_funds") reached the caller now assert that it does not.Overlap with #242
The
_public_jsonrpc_errorhelper from #242 is not onorigin/main, so this PR adds its own small helpers (_invoke_request_id,_invoke_public_message,_invoke_log_error), placed beside the invoke route. The two PRs do not touch the same hunks, but the request-id regex and the id logic are duplicated. Whichever PR merges second can fold them into one helper.Tests

Note
Medium Risk
Changes the public error contract on a live invoke route (body shapes and canned messages), which can break clients that parsed raw exception text, but reduces leakage of upstream payloads and tool secrets.
Overview
Hardens the deprecated
POST /mcp/tools/{service_id}/invokeroute so clients never see rawstr(exc)from tools or unexpected exceptions—matching the JSON-RPC behavior from #242.Adds
tool_originatedonGovernedToolError(including replay paths withreason_code: tool_execution_failed) so tool-raised text is always mapped totool_execution_failed, while gateway refusal codes inREFUSAL_REASON_CODES/_INVOKE_PUBLIC_REASONSstill pass through unchanged.New invoke helpers
_invoke_public_message,_invoke_log_error, and_invoke_request_idreplace exception strings in HTTPdetailandisErrorbodies with canned messages, whitelistextra_data(e.g. dropsupstream_result), and attachX-Request-ID(validated header or fresh uuid) without putting the id in the body so idempotent error replays stay byte-identical.Tests assert markers stay out of responses, logging only records exception class under the request id, and several existing invoke tests expect
tool_execution_failedinstead of tool-specific text.Reviewed by Cursor Bugbot for commit 4a5372d. Bugbot is set up for automated code reviews on this repo. Configure here.
