Description

  • Previously LCORE only accepted environment variables in lightspeed-stack.yaml that were in the form ${env.VAR}, this change extends that behaviour to also include ${VAR}.
    • This is done by adding a wrapper around the currently used OGX parser that normalizes all environment variables into the appropriate format

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Environment variables can now be referenced as either ${VAR} or ${env.VAR} in configuration, including supported default and conditional-value forms.
    • Deployment guidance now documents environment-variable references and links to the related configuration sections.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Secret references in native overrides remain deferred until startup, while other configuration values resolve as expected.
    • Vector-store comparisons and Solr endpoint construction now handle environment-variable references correctly.

Walkthrough

The change adds normalization for ${VAR} and ${env.VAR} references. Configuration loading resolves references where values are needed and retains canonical references in native overrides and synthesized output. The deployment guide and tests cover the supported syntax and behavior.

Changes

Environment reference support

Layer / File(s) Summary
Reference normalization and resolution
src/utils/env_vars.py, tests/conftest.py, tests/unit/utils/test_env_vars.py
New helpers normalize short references to ${env.VAR} and resolve references through OGX. Unit tests cover supported syntax, recursive inputs, type conversion, and resolution errors.
Configuration loading and deferred references
src/configuration.py, src/ogx_configuration.py, tests/integration/test_unified_synthesis.py, tests/unit/test_configuration.py, docs/user_doc/deployment_guide.md
Configuration preprocessing resolves references outside native_override and retains normalized references inside it. Synthesis normalizes its inputs. Tests check that generated files retain references rather than secret values. The deployment guide documents the syntax and resolution behavior.
Resolved values in configuration enrichment
src/ogx_configuration.py, tests/unit/test_ogx_configuration.py
Vector-store ID comparisons and Solr URL enrichment resolve references before using their values. Tests cover both operations.

Configurations using a referenced BYOK vector-store ID can gain a duplicate registration. Resolve the ID for comparison before merging, or accept this bounded risk.

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 100.00% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 29 functions across 8 files. (1 skipped: 1 unsupported.)

Full details: Performance And Algorithmic Complexity

Explanation

PASSED. The added normalization performs one recursive traversal of configuration dictionaries/lists and applies one precompiled regex per string, so it is linear in input size. Resolution delegates once to OGX. The vector-store path resolves one scalar per existing entry, matching the prior per-entry resolver call; no N+1 API/DB work, unbounded state, pagination issue, or expensive work inside a loop was introduced.

Full details: Security And Secret Handling

Explanation

PASSED. The pull request only adds environment-reference normalization and resolution. src/utils/env_vars.py:32-69 canonicalizes references and delegates resolution to OGX; it does not log or persist resolved values. src/configuration.py:44-86 keeps native_override references deferred and canonicalizes them, so secrets are not loaded into that configuration path. The changed tests use synthetic values only. No changed API endpoints, SQL/command/path handling, WebSocket responses, or Kubernetes/RH Secret manifests were found.

320-320: 🎯 Functional Correctness

The comment is refuted. The migration lifts run.yaml into native_override, and LCORE normalizes ${MY_VAR} there before synthesis. The ${env.MY_VAR}-only correction would remove supported syntax from this migration path.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Resolve the BYOK vector_db_id before the comparison too.

The comment says new entries have resolved values. That premise is wrong in both callers:

  • synthesize_configuration (Line 1453) and generate_configuration (Line 1688) normalize their raw input but do not resolve it.
  • brag["vector_db_id"] therefore reaches Line 333 as ${env.STORE_ID}.
  • existing_store_ids holds resolved values.

Trigger: an operator writes vector_db_id: ${STORE_ID} (either spelling), and an existing registered_resources.vector_stores entry refers to the same store.

Result: the membership check never matches, and a duplicate vector store registration is appended. If the existing entry is a literal ID, the result is the same.

Resolve both sides for the comparison. Keep the raw reference in the emitted entry.
