Summary

Upgrades the devframe packages to v1.2.5. That release includes devframes/devframe#445. The @devframes/hub-ui-onboard panel no longer installs just because a same-origin request asked. Each install needs an onConfirm, which by default reads y⏎ from the dev server's stdin.

That default does not work under Nuxt 5's nuxi (details below), so @nuxt/devtools-onboard brings its own confirmation. A click from a browser on the machine that runs nuxt dev is the consent. Other devices get 403, and the panel tells them to install from that machine or run the command shown. There is no terminal step, so it works the same in every nuxi mode.

"From this machine" means both:

  • the socket's remote address is loopback (127.0.0.0/8, ::1, ::ffff:127.x), which another device cannot fake;
  • the Host is a local name (localhost, *.localhost, 127.x, [::1]), so a tunnel or proxy on this machine that keeps its public host does not count.

The check runs in a middleware in front of onboarding.nodeMiddleware. It uses the same raw req.url prefix test, so no URL spelling reaches the POST routes from another device. Upstream's same-origin check still runs after it.

The lockfile also moves @devframes/hub-ui and @devframes/json-render-ui from 1.2.0 to 1.2.5. @vitejs/devtools asks for ^1.0.0, and @devframes/vite@1.2.5 declares an exact @devframes/hub-ui@1.2.5 peer.

refs devframes/devframe#445, devframes/devframe#448, nuxt/nuxt#36581

Why not the default terminal prompt

I ran a real nuxi dev (@nuxt/cli-nightly 4.0.1, 120x40 PTY) with devframe's default onConfirm:

nuxi mode Dev server runs in What happens on Install
TUI (default in a real terminal), first boot nuxi process (stdin raw, owned by the TUI) DF9005 only shows up as "⚠ N warnings". The next keypress answers it, so pressing w/l to read it refuses the install.
TUI, after any restart fork with stdin: 'ignore' Refused at once (DF9006)
NUXT_TUI=plain, first boot nuxi process Works, but y⏎ also runs nuxi's own y shortcut (copy URL)
NUXT_TUI=plain, after a restart fork that shares the TTY with nuxi's readline nuxi reads the answer, so the request never resolves

A link printed in the terminal would work in every mode, but it sends the developer from the browser to the terminal and back to the browser. Reported upstream in devframes/devframe#448.

Boundaries and risks

Who sends the POST Outcome What stops it
Another device on a --host dev server, even with Host: localhost 403 Socket is not loopback
A page on another site (CSRF, form or fetch) 403 Upstream same-origin check (Origin vs Host)
DNS rebinding (evil.example resolving to 127.0.0.1) 403 Vite's host check (verified: Host: evil.example gets 403 before our middleware), and our Host check
A page on another localhost port 403 Same-origin compares host and port
A tunnel or proxy on this machine that keeps its public Host 403 Host is not a local name
A tunnel that rewrites Host to localhost, reached by a non-browser client Allowed Not covered. Browsers through it still fail the same-origin check.
Code already on this machine, or running on the dev origin Allowed Not a boundary: it can already run the package manager

In the cases that are allowed, the worst outcome is installing the fixed @nuxt/devtools spec the button offers, then a dev server restart. Remote and container setups where the browser does not reach the server over loopback with a local Host are refused, and the panel shows the command. This covers Docker port publishing from a bridge address and hosted forwarding URLs. I expect local port forwarding that the browser opens as localhost (VS Code Remote) to pass, but I have not verified it.

Verification

  • pnpm lint, pnpm typecheck, and pnpm test:unit (20 files, 122 tests) pass. pnpm knip reports the same findings as main, none in devtools-onboard.
  • this-machine.test.ts: a table of socket address x Host cases, including a spoofed Host: localhost from a LAN address and tunnel hosts over loopback.
  • module.test.ts:
    • installs on one click from this machine: 202, then the install runs. npm runs offline with an empty cache, so it ends in error without downloading.
    • refuses an install that does not come from this machine: a tunnel Host over loopback gets 403, and the state stays idle.
  • Mutation checks: removing onConfirm fails the first test (expected 403 to be 202). Removing the gate fails the second (expected 202 to be 403).
  • By hand, real nuxi dev --host 0.0.0.0 in TUI mode, npm offline:
    • first boot: from 172.18.0.3 403 in 41 ms (state idle); from localhost 202 in 10 ms, and the install ran;
    • after a restart (fork, stdin /dev/null): same results.
  • Not verified: an install that completes and restarts into the real DevTools; the Nuxt 4 / @nuxt/cli 3.x path.

📝 Walkthrough

The README now documents terminal confirmation for button-initiated installs and a manual command when no interactive terminal is available. A test checks that an install request without confirmation returns HTTP 403 and leaves onboarding status idle. The workspace override and lockfile update devframe to version 1.2.5.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~8 minutes

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to e264e

Clicking install in the onboarding panel now installs immediately when the request appears to come from localhost. A browser reaching the dev server through a forwarded port also looks local, so it can trigger an install without anyone confirming on the dev server machine. Decide whether forwarded sessions should still require explicit approval before merging.

Nothing is injected outside `nuxt dev`.

Because the dev server can be reachable from other devices, each install from the button waits until you type `y` and press Enter in the terminal that runs `nuxt dev`. Without an interactive terminal the install is refused, and the panel shows the command to run yourself.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Qualify the terminal-confirmation instructions.

In the reported Nuxt 5 nuxi runs, the prompt can be hidden, refused, or left unresolved even when a terminal is available. The statement that each install waits for y can leave developers waiting for a prompt they cannot answer. Mention this limitation and direct developers to the manual command when the prompt does not appear or complete.

Do not treat a forwarded browser request as server-machine consent.

When a browser opens http://localhost:<forwarded-port> through SSH port forwarding, the dev server can see a loopback socket and a localhost Host. The browser also sends a matching Origin. This callback then approves an install from a browser that is not on the dev server’s machine, without the upstream terminal confirmation. Keep an explicit approval step for this case; socket address and Host alone cannot distinguish it from a local browser. (code.visualstudio.com)
