Summary

Make a label size drag or colour pick in Style › Text Symbol one undo step and one recorded task step, matching the Labeling pane. Keep a pending size edit attached to its original layer if selection changes.

Testing

  • Before: ribbon_label_size_drag_is_one_undo_and_recorded_step and ribbon_label_colour_drag_is_one_undo_and_recorded_step fail because undo depth increases while the pointer is still held.
After: both pass, checking live preview, one undo/recorded step, Undo and Redo. Typed size entry is covered too.

  • Before: changing selection mid-drag recorded the size edit on Countries instead of Cities, and continued colour dragging changed Countries too.
After: both selection-change regressions pass. Size also covers cleared selection, a hidden ribbon and lost window focus.

  • cargo test -p rustgis-ui-egui --lib ribbon::tests: seven passed, including six new interaction regressions.

  • cargo build --locked --target wasm32-unknown-unknown -p rustgis-web: passed.

  • Rendered and inspected a ui_shot screenshot of the Text Symbol controls with 14 pt labels.

  • cargo xtask ci and pre-commit run --all-files: passed. Locally, CI used umask 0077 for private cache-test fixtures and a Cargo runner that ran only the relay smoke test in an isolated network namespace because port 8767 is occupied. Every test ran; existing ignored tests retained their normal status.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Label-size adjustments in the ribbon now preview on the layer as you drag and are recorded as a single undoable change when the gesture ends.
    • An in-progress adjustment stays associated with the layer where it began, even if you change the selection. The adjustment is finalized when you release the pointer, hide the ribbon, or the window loses focus. This keeps previews and saved changes consistent across interrupted gestures.

Ribbon label-size and color edits preview during gestures and commit as one labels.style command when the gesture ends. Pending edits remain bound to their starting layer. Size drags also finalize when the ribbon is hidden or the window loses focus.

Explanation

Issue #651 requires live preview for ribbon label-size drags and color picks, followed by one labels.style execution, one undo step, and one recorded task step. The PR stores pending edits, previews on the starting layer, and finalizes on release or interruption. The reported regressions cover undo, redo, task recording, selection changes, hidden controls, lost focus, and typed size entry.

Thanks for this — it covers everything in #651: a size drag and a colour pick are each one undo step and one recorded step, with the map previewing meanwhile. I checked the other Text Symbol controls (Bold, Halo, field, placement, ranges) and they are single clicks, so nothing else in the ribbon has this problem.

One thing to fix before merging:

The recorded size gets float noise. label_size_drag(app, ui, &layer, size as f32) stores an f32, and apply_label_size_drag runs json!({"size": drag.size}). Without serde_json's arbitrary_precision feature (the workspace doesn't enable it), an f32 becomes f as f64, so dragging to 14.3 records "size": 14.300000190734863 in the recorded task step and in the history copied as code. The Labeling pane and the old ribbon code pass the DragValue's f64, which records 14.3. Keeping LabelSizeDrag::{before,size} as f64 (or passing the f64 to labels.style) fixes it; a test asserting steps[0].params["size"] would catch it.

Smaller notes, not blocking:

  • ribbon_label_size_can_still_be_typed sends "14" as one Event::Text, but DragValue updates while editing by default (egui 0.36), so typing it key by key still makes two undo steps ("1", clamped to the minimum, then "14"). The Labeling pane does the same, so this is outside [Bug]: Dragging the label size or colour in the ribbon makes one undo step per frame #651 — just noting the test doesn't cover per-keystroke typing.
  • +1 to CodeRabbit's note: driving the hidden/unfocused test through app.ui(ui) would guard the panes::show wiring.
  • The edge cases you handle here (selection changing mid-drag, the control disappearing before release) still affect the Labeling pane's size field, which uses live_drag. That fits better in a follow-up than in this PR.

@jgregoriorincon Thanks for checking the other Text Symbol controls. Fixed the recording noise in 3dff236: the pending edited value stays f64 through labels.style, while layer storage remains f32. The regression now asserts steps[0].params["size"] == json!(14.3); it failed with 14.300000190734863 before the fix and passes now. Full CI, pre-commit and the wasm build passed with the local test settings documented in the PR.

The hidden/unfocused regression already drives the full app frame in 60fb231, including a mutation check that removing the finalizer call makes it fail. I also renamed the text-input test and documented its single-Event::Text scope. I've noted per-keystroke undo grouping and the Labeling pane's selection/disappearing-control cases as separate follow-ups, as suggested.

Code review

I read the full diff and the surrounding labelpane.rs colour-drag code. I didn't run the build or tests. Nothing here needs fixing before merge. The nits are below, and none of them is a blocker.

The change makes a ribbon label-size drag or colour pick one undo step and one recorded step. It does this by previewing the value each frame and committing once, when the pointer is released. A pending size edit stays attached to its original layer if the selection changes. This follows the existing Labeling pane and Symbology class-colour pattern. finish_label_size_drag is wired into panes::show, so a gesture still finishes if the ribbon is hidden or the window loses focus.

Bugs

  • None found.
  • Low confidence (about 25%): the ribbon colour picker and the Labeling pane share one COLOR_DRAG temp key (labelpane.rs). They only collide if both pickers are dragged in the same gesture, which a single pointer can't do. If that changes, the key would need separating.

Security

  • None. There is no new input handling, and the only commands run are labels.style with values taken from the widget.

Performance

  • None. Each frame of a drag removes and re-inserts one small temp value and bumps revision, the same as the existing colour drag.

Quality

  • The size and colour drag state machines are near-duplicates (label_size_drag / apply_label_size_drag and color_drag / apply_color_drag). A shared helper would reduce drift. Confidence about 40%, and fine to leave as is.
  • Low confidence (about 20%): finish_label_size_drag is a long line. If cargo fmt is already clean in CI, there is nothing to do.
  • The new tests are thorough. They cover preview, a single undo/redo step, a selection change mid-drag, a cleared selection, a hidden ribbon, lost focus and typed decimals.
  • #[allow(clippy::unwrap_used)] on the test module is acceptable for test code.

AGENTS.md

  • There are no unwrap, expect or panic calls in the non-test code, and layer lookups go through layer_mut, which returns an Option.
  • No new user-visible strings were added. The existing tl!("Size") and tl!("Color") are kept.
  • Layering is respected: the change is confined to the ui-egui crate, and I saw nothing wasm-incompatible.

The Linux test job on b2f8978 failed in rustgis-render:

stream_tests::partial_source_failure_and_incomplete_summary_reach_unchanged_owner panicked at crates/render/src/stream_tests.rs:408, unwrapping a missing source error. Failed job.

The exact test passed locally on the same commit:

cargo test --locked -p rustgis-render --lib stream_tests::partial_source_failure_and_incomplete_summary_reach_unchanged_owner -- --exact

This may be timing-sensitive; one local pass doesn't establish the cause. The test and its renderer/map implementation came from upstream and are unchanged by this PR. Lint, wasm, licences and Python checks passed. I haven't changed the rendering code or excluded the test. A maintainer rerun of the failed Linux job would help distinguish a transient failure; this account has no upstream Actions write access.

Update: The upstream test fix in #700 is now included in this branch at f3c92df. The Linux test run passed, along with lint, wasm, licences, Python and docs. This CI failure is resolved.
