Summary

Delivery 2 of #699 (requirements 3 and 5), following merged #701. This is a partial delivery, not a closure of the issue.

  • Replace the Data Sources pane's Services, Databases, S3 and STAC APIs sections with grouped named Connections and a New Connection menu. Keep Favourites, Recent, Folders and Library; Earth Search and Planetary Computer remain in Library. Legacy saved entries stay in preferences, and remembered S3 connections remain available in the S3 dialog.
  • Add kind-specific New/Edit Connection forms with rename/group support, session-only passwords and keys, Test, Save and retry-after-login-failure handling. Row menus provide Edit, Test, Duplicate, Copy Address and Remove. Clicking a row opens the kind's existing add dialog, connected or prefilled.
  • Extend connection.test to accept unsaved definitions and a two-phase probe/answer flow. Web-kind requests run off the frame on desktop and web; database tests remain synchronous on desktop. Share STAC response parsing across native and wasm.
  • Add engine and UI regression coverage and update the user guide and comparison documentation.
connections-pane-short

Verification

  • cargo xtask ci passed on the final rebased tree: formatting, workspace Clippy with warnings denied, workspace tests and layer checks.
  • CC_wasm32_unknown_unknown=/opt/homebrew/opt/llvm/bin/clang AR_wasm32_unknown_unknown=/opt/homebrew/opt/llvm/bin/llvm-ar cargo build --target wasm32-unknown-unknown -p rustgis-web passed on the final rebased tree.
  • Focused engine connection tests and UI connections_ smoke tests passed after integrating feat(connections): add reusable endpoints, storage and session logins #701, including persistence/import and create → unsaved Test → Save → Edit → Remove.
  • CLI smoke verified a STAC probe URL, supplied-answer parsing (one collection), and an unchanged empty connection store.
  • Rendered and inspected headless screenshots of the grouped pane, WMS edit/Test result (WMS OpenStreetMap WMS: 11 layers), and the complete S3 form.

Scope notes

  • Browsing inside the Connections tree is delivery 3; row clicks reuse existing add dialogs.
  • Database connections are desktop-only; saved database rows remain visible on web but cannot be opened or tested there.
  • S3 Test can register a session login even if the form is subsequently cancelled, matching the existing S3 Connect behavior. Secrets are never saved with the connection.
  • feat(connections): add reusable endpoints, storage and session logins #701 was squash-merged, so this branch was rebased onto current main and contains only this delivery's commit.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Manage services, databases, STAC APIs, and S3 endpoints as named connections in the Data Sources pane, with optional grouping.
    • Create, edit, duplicate, test, open, copy addresses, and remove connections. Test unsaved definitions, request a secret-free probe address, or submit a response for parsing without a network request.
    • Configure connection credentials, including S3 access keys and profiles. Tests clear outdated feedback when connection details change.
  • Changes
    • Separate saved endpoint lists and source-entry fields are no longer shown in the Data Sources pane; connections are presented together instead.

Code review

The PR adds an unsaved-connection Test, a probe/answer split so the app can fetch off the frame, and a connection form and dialog. It also swaps the Data Sources pane's separate lists (Services, Databases, S3, STAC APIs) for a single Connections section. I read the whole diff and the surrounding code. I did not run the build or tests. The code is generally careful: no unwrap in non-test code, and the hostile-params test is extended.

Bugs

  • Unsaved S3 test leaves a session login behind (medium confidence). connection.test without an id still calls login(...) and s3::grant, which register a process-wide S3 connection. The same login runs again on the answer pass, and the registration persists if the user cancels the dialog. The new test needs s3::disconnect("probe-s3") to clean up after itself. Posted inline on crates/engine/src/cmd/connections.rs.
  • Stale test result (low confidence). cache::download can't be cancelled, and poll only checks that some connection dialog is open. The summary can describe an address the user has since edited. Posted inline on crates/ui-egui/src/connectionui.rs.

Security

  • Nothing blocking. Passwords and keys are cleared from the form after Save and are only sent to connection.login. answer is parsed by the existing parsers.

Performance

  • Nothing notable. The connections list uses a generation-keyed snapshot, and the polling repaint is throttled to 100 ms.

Quality

  • The answer parameter is silently ignored for database kinds, and the command then runs a live test. That is reasonable, but worth a line in the parameter docs.
  • probe_url and answered repeat the kind-to-handler mapping from test. A new kind has to be added in three places.

AGENTS.md

  • Interface strings use tl! and i18n::fmt, and there is no unwrap or unsafe outside tests.
  • There are no new assets or dependencies.
  • The new regression cases are in hostile_params_never_panic.
  • Wasm: the database kinds are guarded with cfg!(target_arch = "wasm32").

For an unsaved definition (no id), login runs here and registers an S3 session under c.name, which clean doesn't make unique. Two consequences:

  1. Pressing Test in the New/Edit dialog with a name that matches a saved connection (for example a typo'd key for "prod") overwrites that connection's live session. Nothing is saved, and the dialog's own "keys never saved" model doesn't cover this.
  2. A test of a connection that is never saved leaves credentials in the process-wide s3 registry under that name. They stay until close, and the Sources pane may show them.

Consider disconnecting a session this call created, or rejecting or uniquifying the name when it collides with another connection. Confidence: medium.

Code review

I reviewed the engine changes (connection.test, stac::collections_json) and the new connectionui.rs in full. I read the Sources pane rewrite, the dialog wiring and the new tests. I did not read the smoke.rs additions or the docs changes (the diff was only paged through line 1000), and I did not run anything.

Bugs

  • connection.test for an unsaved S3 connection (medium confidence). connection.test logs in an unsaved S3 definition under its name, which clean doesn't make unique. If the name matches a saved connection, Test replaces that connection's live session with the dialog's keys. Credentials from a connection that is never saved also stay in the s3 registry until the app closes. See the inline comment on crates/engine/src/cmd/connections.rs:287.

Security

  • Nothing found. Secrets stay session-only, addresses go through clean (which redacts them and rejects control characters), and the new answer and probe paths take no file or network input beyond what the existing commands already accept. The hostile-parameter test has two new cases for them.

Performance

  • Nothing notable. The pane snapshots connections by generation, and the probe fetch runs off the frame.

Quality

  • answer is parsed with from_utf8_lossy and no size bound beyond what the cache already enforces. This is probably fine, but a cap would match the "hostile input" guidance. Low confidence.
  • connection.test now has three modes (live, probe, answer). The answer and database interplay is documented only in the params string, so a short doc comment on test would help. Nit.

AGENTS.md

  • Layering and wasm handling look right: database kinds are gated with cfg!(target_arch = "wasm32"), and there is no unwrap in non-test code.
  • User-visible strings use tl! and i18n::fmt.
  • The dialog hints ("host=… dbname=… user=…", "https://…") are untranslated literals, which is acceptable for example syntax.
  • The Sources pane no longer shows the old per-kind save boxes. The code mentions a one-time import of legacy saved endpoints, which I only skimmed.
