Summary

Delivery 5 of #699 (requirements 13–15). Projects can reuse a saved connection's login, and saved project files no longer contain layer tokens.

Log in once for a project's database layers

  • Database errors now say whether the server refused the login. PostgreSQL reports this as SQLSTATE 28P01 or tokio-postgres's "password missing", MySQL as 1045/1698, and SQL Server as 18456. These become DataError::Login, and the layer records it in SourceLayer::login. A server that is down or a missing table never counts as a refused login.
  • A layer belongs to a saved connection when both have the same password-free address (Connections::for_database / for_layer; if several match, the first in list order). The project file itself never stores a connection id.
  • When a project opens, one notice per connection says how many of its layers need its password. connection.list gives that count as waiting.
  • connection.login sets the password for each waiting layer and reopens them all, then reports reopened and failed. After a wrong password the layers stay waiting. Logging in through any connection with the same address works.
  • In the app, Log In… is on the connection's right-click menu in Data Sources, and Log In to {name}… is on a waiting layer's menu. Both open Edit Connection with the password field.
log-in-dialog layer-log-in-menu

Saved projects keep no layer secrets

  • One audit finding: ArcGIS token= was being copied onto derived layer URLs and saved in the project file.
  • Layer::addresses_mut, Map::addresses_mut and Project::addresses_mut collect every address a layer is reread from: service groups and their children, tile and dated tile URLs, terrain, dataset sources, streamed and raster paths, and Zarr stores.
  • Saved project files, .rgismap map files, .rgislyr layer files, map and project packages, and the browser download all leave out userinfo, fragments and secret query values. The open project keeps them.
  • project.save/saveAs report stripped and show a notice.
  • Reopening a plain .rgis file whose bytes exactly match a file this process wrote restores the secrets. The match is a keyed SipHash of the bytes plus their length, kept for the 32 most recent distinct snapshots with stripped addresses. A changed file never gets secrets back, and neither do packages (project.openText {"package": true}), templates, or map and layer imports, even when a package's JSON is byte-identical to a saved file.

Testing

  • New tests:
    • saved_layer_files_keep_no_address_secrets: standalone feature/raster layer exports strip credentials from dataset, streamed, raster and Zarr addresses, preserve non-secret query values, and leave live addresses unchanged.
    • database_authorization_failures_do_not_wait_for_password: fake PostgreSQL HBA-policy and missing-role 28000 errors keep their messages and never produce waiting counts or login notices.
    • database_layers_wait_for_their_connection_login, against an in-process fake PostgreSQL server: explicit missing-password handshake, refused-login flag, waiting notice and count, for_layer, wrong password, two connections with the same address, and a server that is down.
    • saved_projects_keep_no_layer_tokens: saved file, map file and packages; restore of the exact file; a file changed by one byte; a hostile package carrying the exact saved JSON; a hand-written redacted URL.
    • layer_address_redaction_preserves_templates_and_local_paths.
    • refused_login_is_not_a_missing_table (MySQL).
  • CARGO_INCREMENTAL=0 cargo xtask ci passes on the review-fix tree: formatting, workspace Clippy (-D warnings), all workspace tests and layering. Both new regressions failed before the fixes and pass afterward.
  • cargo build --target wasm32-unknown-unknown -p rustgis-web passes.
  • CLI review-fix smoke: layer.save strips userinfo, tokens and signatures while retaining f=json and collection=roads; fake PostgreSQL 28000 HBA-policy and missing-role rejections produce no waiting count or login notice.
  • CLI: saving a sample with an ArcGIS token=s3cret tile layer reports "stripped": 1, and grep -c s3cret on the saved file prints 0.
  • ui_shot screenshots, using the fake PostgreSQL server and a project with two PostGIS layers:
    • A notice names the connection, and the two refused layers are red.
    • The layer menu offers Log In to Production GIS….
    • Choosing it opens Edit Connection with the password field.

📝 Walkthrough

Database drivers now identify login failures, and matching project layers can be retried after login. Project, map, and package serialization strips credentials from supported web addresses. Project opening distinguishes packages from project text that may restore matching saved addresses.

Two concerns with refused_login:

  1. Matching the source's text "password missing" is brittle: it depends on a tokio_postgres internal message and silently degrades to Format if it changes. A test that exercises the real "no password" path would catch that (the new test only covers the 28P01 path).
  2. INVALID_AUTHORIZATION_SPECIFICATION (28000) is also what the server returns for no pg_hba.conf entry for host… and for a nonexistent role. Those aren't fixed by typing a password, yet layers get marked login and show a "Log In" prompt. Consider limiting this to INVALID_PASSWORD (28P01) plus the missing-password case. Confidence: medium.

Addressed in dc656bc: 28000 is no longer treated as a password failure. Fake-server regressions now cover no pg_hba.conf entry and a missing role, and verify that neither is reported as waiting for a login. The existing engine test already opens two layers with no password before exercising 28P01 on subsequent wrong-password login attempts; I made that phase explicit with comments and assertions on the real driver error. The exact password missing fallback remains documented because tokio-postgres exposes no typed discriminator for that client-side config error. The duplicated reconnect closures are also replaced by one private helper. Full cargo xtask ci, the wasm build and CLI smoke scenarios pass.

Design note: every save now permanently drops tokens and keys from tile, service and dataset URLs (for example ?access_token= on a basemap). Once RustGIS restarts, those layers fail to load, and there is no re-login path for web layers like the one database connections get. The docs and the save notice say this, but it is a behaviour change for existing users. Consider an opt-in to keep them, or prompting for credentials on reopen. Also, restoring from an in-memory hash of the file text works only within one process, and the 32-entry cap quietly evicts older saves, so opening an older save after 32 more saves loses its secrets. Confidence: medium (product choice, not a defect).

Credential stripping remains intentional for requirement 13: this delivery must not persist layer-address secrets, so I have not added a keep-secrets opt-in or a web-login subsystem. In dc656bc, the user guide and saved_text documentation now explicitly describe the process-wide limit of 32 distinct remembered snapshots with stripped addresses, oldest-entry eviction, and the need to add affected layers again after eviction or restart. The open project retains its live addresses; packages and imports never restore remembered secrets.

Code review

I read the full diff and the surrounding code, and posted two inline comments. I did not build the code or run any tests. The change is sound overall: the credential stripping, the database login detection and the reopen flow hang together, and the new tests cover the main paths.

Bugs

  • Login classification is too broad for PostgreSQL (crates/data/src/source/postgis.rs, medium confidence). refused_login treats SQLSTATE 28000 as a refused password. The server also returns 28000 for no pg_hba.conf entry and for a nonexistent role, and typing a password doesn't fix either. Layers then show a "Log In" prompt that can't help.
  • Fragile string match (same function, medium confidence). It detects a missing password by comparing the error source's text to "password missing", which is a tokio_postgres message. If that wording changes, it silently falls back to Format. The new test covers only the 28P01 path, not this one.

Security

  • No leaks found. Stripping covers project saves, map and package exports, and the web download. Package contents and files opened through the import paths never restore secrets (from_import_json, package: true). Secrets come back only when the file's bytes match one this process wrote, using a randomly keyed hash.

Performance

  • Nothing significant. waiting() rescans all layers each time connection.list runs, which is acceptable.

Quality

  • Product behaviour change (crates/engine/src/project.rs, medium confidence, flagged as a design choice). Every save now drops tokens and keys from web layer URLs, for example a basemap's ?access_token=. After a restart those layers fail, and unlike database layers they have no log-in path. Restoring in the same session depends on an in-memory table capped at 32 entries, so older saves can lose their secrets. The docs and the save notice explain this.
  • Minor: the again closure is now duplicated across open_postgis, open_mysql and open_sqlserver. A small helper would remove the repetition.

AGENTS.md

  • The new interface strings use i18n::fmt and tl!, as required. The unwrap() calls in tests.rs are test-only. One thing I didn't check is whether hostile_params_never_panic covers the new package parameter on project.openText. The new login and reopen code has no unwrap or panic.

Redact layer exports before serialization.

ui.saveItem sends layer bytes to a browser download or file save. The "layer" branch serializes embed_layer(...) without removing credentials from its addresses. A layer source or tile URL can therefore retain tokens in the exported .rgislyr file.

Addressed the standalone layer-export finding in dc656bc. Layer::addresses_mut now visits dataset, streamed-source, raster and time-following Zarr addresses without allocating a per-layer collection; Map::addresses_mut reuses it in the existing restoration order. The .rgislyr export strips the embedded clone before serialization and leaves the live layer unchanged. The new saved_layer_files_keep_no_address_secrets regression covers all four address fields and preservation of non-secret query values. It failed on the original export and passes with the fix. CLI layer.save smoke confirms credentials/tokens/signatures are removed while f=json and collection=roads remain. Full cargo xtask ci and the wasm build pass. The PR description and user guide now explicitly include layer files.

Error 18456 is SQL Server's generic "Login failed" and covers more than a bad password: an unknown or disabled login, or a login that can't open the default database (the state code tells them apart). MySQL 1045 has the same problem (unknown user, host not allowed). The PostgreSQL side deliberately excludes SQLSTATE 28000 because a password can't fix it. As written, these cases get flagged Login, so the layer is reported as waiting for a password that won't help. Confidence: medium-low. It's a UX mislabel, not a crash. Consider narrowing by state, or softening the notice wording.

src.open() connects to the database synchronously for each waiting layer, and reopen runs inside the command. With many layers on a slow or unreachable host, the login command, and the UI thread with it, can block for N times the connect timeout. Consider stopping after the first non-login failure for the same database, or reusing a single connection attempt per database. Also, remember_password is called again for every layer even though database_param already stored the password. Confidence: medium-low.

Code review

I read the full diff and the surrounding code. I did not build or run anything. I found no crashes or leaks of credentials. The concerns below are minor and mostly about user-facing behaviour. I posted two as inline comments.

Bugs

  • Over-broad login classification (medium-low confidence). SQL Server 18456 and MySQL 1045 also cover an unknown or disabled user and a host that isn't allowed. A password can't fix those, yet the layer is flagged login and shown as "waiting for a password". The PostgreSQL side deliberately excludes SQLSTATE 28000 for this reason, so the three drivers are inconsistent. (inline, sqlserver.rs)
  • PR text doesn't match the code (high confidence, minor). The PR description says PostgreSQL maps 28P01 and 28000 to Login. The code (refused_login) maps only 28P01 plus the "password missing" source message, and the new test asserts that 28000 is not a login failure. The code looks right, so the description should be corrected.
  • Brittle string match (low confidence). Detecting tokio-postgres's client-side "password missing" error by comparing the error source's text breaks silently if the library changes its wording. The comment notes the engine test guards this, and that test does cover it.

Security

  • Nothing found. Secret stripping covers service groups, tile and dated URLs, terrain, dataset, streamed, raster and Zarr addresses, plus packages and exports. Restoring secrets needs an exact, keyed-hash match of a file this process wrote. Packages, templates and imports never restore them, and the tests cover a hostile package carrying byte-identical JSON. The password is only ever sent to an address that matches a saved connection.
  • Residual (informational). Secrets stay in process memory for up to 32 snapshots. This is documented and acceptable.

Performance

  • Blocking reconnects (medium-low confidence). reopen makes a synchronous network connect for each waiting layer. With many layers and an unreachable host, connection.login can block for N times the connect timeout. It also stores the password again for every layer. (inline, connections.rs)

Quality

  • saved_address drops any URL fragment, and not only secret ones. This is probably intended, but the docs don't say so.
  • Project::save now takes &mut self and mutates the addresses temporarily, restoring them afterwards, including on a serialization error. That is correct, but it is a surprising change for a method called save. Working on a cloned address list, or having saved_text take &self, would be safer.
  • The new tests rely on unwrap() and a never-joined listener thread (take(16)). That is fine in test code.

AGENTS.md

  • No unwrap, expect or panic in non-test code. The new code is wasm-gated correctly and the layering is respected.
  • The engine's user-facing notices are plain English, which matches existing engine behaviour. The UI strings use tl! and i18n::fmt.
  • The PR touches 18 files, 15 of them source and 3 docs or tests. The new tests cover the refused-login flag, redaction, restore and hostile-package cases, which meets the "every fix gets a regression test" rule.

Strip addresses from template downloads.

The "template" branch serializes t without calling strip_addresses. template() leaves service-group URLs, tile URLs, standalone table sources, streamed-layer paths, and raster paths intact. A .rgistemplate download can therefore contain userinfo, fragments, or secret query values.

Call crate::project::strip_addresses(t.addresses_mut()) before to_json(&t).

This is required by the PR objective that templates and browser downloads contain no layer secrets.

In the "template" branch, sanitize the template’s addresses with
crate::project::strip_addresses before serializing it with to_json, so
downloaded templates do not retain sensitive URL components.
🟡 Minor · Cache only snapshots written successfully. · project.rs:654-657

Cache only snapshots written successfully.

save() calls saved_text() before write_atomic(). If the write fails, an existing file with the same bytes can later restore this project's live secrets even though this process did not write that file. Commit the cache entry after write_atomic() succeeds, or remove it when the write fails. Keep a separate cache path if saved_text() also supports browser downloads.

This follows the PR objective that restoration is limited to bytes written by the same process.

Review comment at @crates/engine/src/project.rs around lines 654 - 657:
Update Project::save and the saved_text cache flow so a snapshot is associated
with the target path only after write_atomic succeeds; ensure failed writes
cannot leave a restorable cache entry. If saved_text also serves browser
downloads, keep download caching separate from the cache used to restore files
saved by this process.
