Description

Part 4/5 of a series completing the ClusterObjectSet (COS) Ready condition vocabulary. Breaking (experimental API): removes a status reason.

Transient errors now leave the Ready condition unchanged and return the error for rate-limited backoff requeue, instead of overwriting Ready with RetryableError. On a first reconcile that hits a transient error before Ready is ever set, the condition stays absent (consumers read absent as Unknown).

Changes

  • Every transient/infra error site (secret read, phase build, engine create, establish-watch, revision reconcile, teardown error, cache-free on delete/archive) returns the error without mutating Ready. Remove setRetryableErrorConditions and ClusterObjectSetReasonRetryableError.
  • CE reconstruction goes neutral on transient COS errors: determineFailureReason flags only ObjectCollision / ValidationFailure as Installed=Failed; progressingFromReady keeps Retrying only for ObjectCollision.

Scope

Experimental API only; go-apidiff / crd-diff will flag the removed reason constant. Updates unit tests (transient-error cases now assert Ready unchanged/absent; CE determineFailureReason / progressingFromReady), the concept + large-bundle docs, and regenerates CRD/manifests/API reference.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Behavior Changes
    • Transient internal errors no longer set a separate RetryableError status. The Ready condition remains unchanged while the operation is retried with backoff, and may be absent on the first attempt.
    • These errors are no longer treated as installation failures. Validation failures and object collisions continue to be reported distinctly.
  • Documentation
    • Updated ClusterObjectSet status guidance to explain how Ready behaves during transient errors and retries.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The ClusterObjectSet controller no longer sets Ready=False with reason RetryableError for transient reconciliation errors. API and CRD descriptions now state that transient errors leave Ready unchanged and are retried with backoff. The operator controller no longer treats RetryableError as an installation failure or retrying progress reason.

When revision errors continue past the progress deadline, Ready can remain stale instead of reporting that the deadline was exceeded. Resolve this before merging unless that status behavior is explicitly accepted.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Preserve the progress-deadline transition on revision errors.

When revisionEngine.Reconcile returns an error, this branch returns before the existing deadline-aware status update. If the progress deadline has expired, Ready can remain stale instead of becoming False/ProgressDeadlineExceeded. Apply the deadline transition before returning, but preserve Ready for non-expired transient errors.

a first reconcile the condition may remain absent (read as Unknown). The
ClusterExtension no longer maps transient COS errors to Installed=Failed or

and the setRetryableErrorConditions helper. determineFailureReason now treats only
ObjectCollision and ValidationFailure as installation failures.
