Description

Fix how ClusterObjectSet object counts are serialized so they are reported all-or-nothing, never partially.

Previously the per-phase and aggregate objectCounts sub-fields present, synced, and ready used omitempty, so a zero count was dropped while its non-zero siblings were shown — e.g. a phase rolling out rendered as:

objectCounts:
  present: 1
  synced: 1
  total: 1 # ready: 0 missing

Change

  • Make the count fields (total/present/synced/ready) +required (drop omitempty), so whenever objectCounts is present every field is serialized together, including zeros.
  • Make the parent objectCounts field optional via omitzero so it is omitted entirely until counts are computed, rather than rendered as a partially-populated or all-zero object. (omitempty is a no-op on a non-pointer struct, which is why the old tag never omitted anything.)

Net result: objectCounts is either fully present (all four fields) or absent — no partial output.

Scope

Experimental API only. Regenerated CRDs / manifests / applyconfiguration. Adds unit tests for both the "all fields present together" and "omitted when zero" behaviors.

Note: kube-api-linter flags the optional non-pointer objectCounts ("should be a pointer"); this is an intentional modeling choice (value type + omitzero per the repo's struct-field convention) and the lint check is overridden.

    • Status responses now omit aggregate and per-phase object counts until counts are computed.
    • When counts are available, each count field—including present, synced, and ready—is reported even when its value is zero. These fields are required whenever an object-count summary is included.

📝 Walkthrough

Aggregate and per-phase objectCounts can be omitted until counts are computed. When present, each count object serializes all fields, including zero values. The CRD schemas make all count fields required and allow observed phases to omit objectCounts.

The API types use zero-value omission for aggregate and per-phase objectCounts. When present, count objects serialize every field, including zeros. Serialization tests cover zero and nonzero counts. The CRD schemas require all count fields and allow observed phases to omit objectCounts.

During a controller upgrade, ClusterObjectSet status may remain stale while an older pod’s updates are rejected for omitting zero-valued counts. Keep the fields optional in the CRD for the compatibility window before merging.

overriding lint errors as pointer usage violates our internal api conventions

The per-phase and aggregate objectCounts fields present, synced, and ready used
omitempty, so a zero count (e.g. ready=0 while a phase rolls out) was dropped
from status while its non-zero siblings were shown.

Make the count fields (total/present/synced/ready) +required so that when
objectCounts is present every field is serialized together, including zeros.
Make the parent objectCounts field optional via omitzero (omitempty is a no-op
on a non-pointer struct) so it is omitted entirely until counts are computed,
rather than rendered as a partially-populated or all-zero object.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Keep these count fields optional for the upgrade window.

The previous controller omits zero-valued fields. The object-controller uses a rolling update with maxSurge: 1 and maxUnavailable: 0, so an old pod can remain active while the new CRD is installed. Its Status().Update can then fail because the new CRD requires fields that the old payload omits.

The repository prohibits adding a required field to an existing CRD version. ClusterObjectSet being experimental does not define an exception. Keep the JSON tags without omitempty, but keep these fields optional in the CRD for one release.

Regenerate the CRD so these fields are removed from its required lists.
