✨ initialize ClusterObjectSet Ready=Unknown/Pending; classify digest errors - #3023
Conversation
…errors Follow-ups to review comments on operator-framework#3012: - Initialize the Ready condition to Unknown/Pending when it is absent, so a freshly created active revision always reports an explicit Ready rather than leaving it absent when an early transient error returns before the first evaluation. Done in the outer Reconcile (after any in-reconcile metadata patches that refresh the object), only when Ready is absent (so it never overwrites an observed state), and skipped for deleting or archived revisions. Adds the Pending reason. - Classify computePhaseDigest's json.Marshal failure as configValidationError (InvalidSpecification) so no deterministic failure reaches the transient fallthrough, and document the invariant that anything reaching the buildBoxcutterPhases fallthrough is a transient infrastructure error. Updates the CRD doc-string, concept doc, generated CRD/manifests/applyconfig, and unit tests. guarantee that the condition is always present with a guarantee limited to
active, non-deleting revisions after a successful status write. Note that
consumers must handle an absent condition before that write.

Limit the Ready guarantee to eligible revisions.
An archived revision can finish its first reconciliation without a Ready condition when sibling listing fails. The controller also skips Pending initialization during deletion. Replace “it is always present” with a guarantee limited to active, non-deleting revisions after a successful status write. Consumers must still handle an absent condition before that write. Description
Follow-ups to two review comments on #3012 (merged), both on the
ClusterObjectSetreconcile.1. Initialize
Ready=Unknown/Pendingwhen absent (#3012 r4288557616)Previously, if an early transient error returned before the first evaluation, a freshly created revision was left with no
Readycondition (consumers read absent asUnknownonly by convention). Now the controller initializesReady=Unknown/Pendingso an active revision always reports an explicit condition.Reconcileafterreconcile()returns, so it runs after any in-reconcile metadata patches (e.g. the finalizer patch) that refresh the object and would otherwise discard an in-memory status.Readyis absent, so it never overwrites a previously observed state (no flapping).Pending).Pendingreason.2. Tighten
buildBoxcutterPhaseserror classification (#3012 r4288531770)The catch-all after the typed-error checks treats any remaining error as transient (requeue + leave
Ready). Audit showed every current deterministic failure is already classified asconfigValidationError/referencedContentError— exceptcomputePhaseDigest'sjson.Marshalfailure. This:configValidationError→InvalidSpecification, so no deterministic error can reach the transient fallthrough.TransientErrormatch.)Scope
Experimental API only. Updates the CRD doc-string, concept doc, regenerated CRD/manifests/applyconfiguration, and unit tests (including the no-overwrite and archived-skip invariants).
