feat(image-viewer): right-to-left paging with dir, and two gesture fixes - #248
Conversation
With react-native-gesture-handler 3 the pan's activating event carries no translation, so `|translationX| > |translationY|` compared 0 with 0 and every drag was taken as a drag to dismiss: a sideways swipe in a gallery pulled the picture off instead of turning the page. The decision moves into `dragIntent()`, which calls a drag that has not moved yet `undecided`. The pan then waits, and the first update that has moved decides between paging and dismissing with the same rule. With gesture-handler 2, which reports the translation on activation, it decides at the start as before. The contract tests run both sequences.
Closing by changing `open` measures the current thumbnail before the flight home, but a drag away or a tap outside the picture started the flight from the rectangle measured when the page last turned. An owner that scrolls its own carousel to follow `onIndexChange` moves the thumbnail after that measure, so the picture flew back to where the thumbnail used to be. Both gestures now mark the viewer as closing on the UI thread at once, measure, and then start the same flight.
A gallery can now run right to left: with `dir="rtl"` the next picture sits to the left and a swipe to the right turns to it. It defaults to `ltr`, so nothing changes for existing apps; passing `useDirection()` follows the reading direction. The pager still counts in page order and only its offset on screen is mirrored, so the counter, `index`, `onIndexChange` and the screen reader's increment and decrement keep meaning next and previous. The pager is pinned to a left-to-right layout, because the pages and the flight are placed in measured screen pixels that an RTL layout would mirror a second time. The docs gain a Right to left example and the example app a demo.

Keep the trigger order aligned with the viewer in RTL applications.
When the application layout is RTL, flex-row-reverse reverses a row that React Native already mirrors. The first trigger appears on the left, but ImageViewer dir="rtl" places its next page on the left. Select flex-row for an RTL application layout and flex-row-reverse for an LTR application layout. Update the matching examples in apps/docs/content/docs/components/image-viewer.mdx and apps/docs/scripts/usage/image-viewer.json. React Native documents inherited RTL layout direction. (reactnative.dev) Based on learnings, React Native automatically mirrors layout-related styles in RTL layouts; a manual reversal can mirror them twice.

A pan that activates without a translation waits for the first update that has moved to decide between paging and dismissing. A quick flick can end before any update arrives, and the end event then carried the only movement: the drag was dropped, neither turning the page nor closing. The end event now decides and applies its translation before the gesture acts on it. Deciding late also means a pinch or a close can start in between. An undecided pan now settles to nothing unless the viewer is still open and no pinch has begun, so neither can turn into a drag away. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The Right to left example reverses its row with `flex-row-reverse`,
which is right in an app laid out left to right. Under a right-to-left
layout rows already run that way, and reversing one again puts the first
picture on the wrong side. The description now says which goes with
which: `flex-row-reverse` left to right, `flex-row` with
`dir={useDirection()}` right to left.

The new ImageViewer demo changed the screen's demo signature, and the generated metadata the example's CI check compares against was left behind. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Do not resolve a canceled pan into a page change.
If an undecided pan ends with success === false, this code can use the end event’s horizontal translation to select MODE_PAGE. The page branch can then call onIndexChange for a gesture the system canceled. Check success before resolving end-event movement. Gesture Handler 2 documents that onEnd also runs for canceled active gestures. (docs.swmansion.com)

For right-to-left paging in ImageViewer and the two gesture fixes that came with it (#248). Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Merged and released in panelui-native 0.114.0. Thank you — the separate commits, the tests and the before/after recordings made this easy to review. On top of your commits I added a fix for a pan that ends before it moves (CodeRabbit's |
What this changes
ImageViewergets adirprop ('ltr' | 'rtl', default'ltr'). Withdir="rtl"the next picture sits to the left and a swipe to the right turns to it. Two gesture fixes come first, as separate commits:translationX = translationY = 0, so|0| > |0|was false and every drag became a dismiss: a sideways swipe never turned the page. The decision now lives in a puredragIntent()that returnsundecidedfor a drag that has not moved, and the first update that has moved decides with the same rule. Gesture-handler 2 reports the translation on activation and decides at the start, as before.openalready re-measured, but a drag away or a tap outside flew home to the rectangle measured when the page last turned. An owner that scrolls its list inonIndexChangemoves the thumbnail after that measure, so the picture could land where the thumbnail used to be. Both gestures now mark the viewer closing on the UI thread, measure, then start the same flight. Why
Right-to-left locales (Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, Urdu) expect the next item to the left, and some users, many left-handed people among them, prefer swiping right to go forward. Today the only workaround is to register the triggers in reverse, which reverses
index/onIndexChangeand makes the "N of M" counter count backwards. The two fixes make the gallery usable on gesture-handler 3, which the peer range (>=2.0.0) allows.Refs #247
API
Nothing changes for existing code, on gesture-handler 2 or 3:
index,onIndexChange, the counter and the screen reader's increment / decrement still mean next / previous.direction: 'ltr', since pages and the flight are placed in measured screen pixels that an RTL layout would mirror a second time.dirdefaults to'ltr'to keep this non-breaking. Following the reading direction by default, as Swipe and Slider do, could be a later change if you prefer it.Type of change
How it was tested
Development builds of
apps/exampleon an Android 13 emulator (React Native 0.86.2, Reanimated 4.5.1, worklets 0.10.1), ImageViewer screen, with Show taps on:main, sideways swipes drag the picture as a dismiss and never page. On this branch both demos page and close into the right thumbnail.Unit tests in
image-viewer-geometry.test.mjs:dragIntent()against gesture-handler 2 style sequences (translation already on activation) and gesture-handler 3 style sequences ((0, 0)on activation, movement only in a later update), horizontal both ways, vertical both ways, a single picture, and a pan that never moves; plussnapPagewith a mirrored right-to-left swipe.Bug 2 needs an owner that scrolls in
onIndexChange, which the example demos do not, so it was checked in an app on gesture-handler 3.3.0 / Reanimated 4.7.1 / React Native 0.88.0 with a carousel drivingindex: the picture now closes into the slide the carousel scrolled to.Not tested: iOS, and an app with
I18nManager.forceRTL.Screenshots or recording
maindir="rtl", and closes into the right thumbnail.ltr(default)dir="rtl"Checklist
