fix(db): classify Effect deltas from result membership - #2301
A preloaded LEFT join can emit an Effect update for an unmatched row that never entered the result. Coalesced source writes can also report an update when the row enters or exits. This PR classifies deltas from preceding result membership and net multiplicity.
For example, an absent key can receive insert, delete, and insert in one scheduler flush. Its callback must be enter. A present key can receive delete, insert, and delete in one flush. Its callback must be exit. Callable and opaque projections follow the same membership rule.
Unordered Effects track result keys without retaining projected rows or comparing their values. They preserve existing update notifications, including equal projections. The first retraction supplies the previous or exiting value. Ordered Effects retain their existing coherent-value tracking and equality behavior. Callback subsets and later callback replacement preserve current delta values.
The restored metadata owner also strengthens two checker controls. Both callback channels receive the same hostile key, so channel disagreement cannot hide a missing continuity check.
The maintainer excluded the separate Set optimization. The matcher, existing equality campaigns, and registry remain identical to the merge base. The coverage map and versioned replay recipes preserve the known synthetic limitations.
🔬 Oracle Coverage
The primary owner is RC Effect explicit source metadata in docs/contributing/oracle-coverage.md. The Effect evidence record contains commands, fingerprints, all ten review verdicts, and limits.
Law: Membership determines enter, update, or exit. Callback profiles preserve previous and current readable values. Authority: EffectConfig, DeltaEvent, the guide, and the maintainer's decision to preserve unordered notifications.
Reach: Original histories retain all 5,512 cells at count 1. Membership histories retain another 120 cells at count 1. The extension crosses six payloads, five callback profiles, and initial delivery versus skipInitial. Each core and actual React path reaches all 480 new cells once.
RED: The initial owner fails 64 startup assertions before repair. The membership extension fails 14 histories on unchanged d97c1aaf4. The latest callback extension fails 96 histories on unchanged 2b3dd8c2d: 56 core and 40 React. The original 240 owner tests still pass there.
GREEN: All 708 targeted tests pass, including 300 primary-owner tests and 60 shared-model React histories. Both paths compare initial delivery, unobserved updates, callback replacement, exit, reentry, next use, and disposal.
Mutant: A stale-value mutant survives 314 older tests and fails the expanded histories at exit. Gross-count membership fails 79 tests. Full mutant runs preserve declared reach. Earlier controls reject missing continuity and suppressed real updates.
Limits: Finite eager-source histories and actual React hook commits. No arbitrary schedules, changing join multiplicity, other providers/frameworks, ordered opaque-value semantics, or exact rich-instance identity claim follows.
The ten-item review yields nine repairs and one duplicate. No new item is deferred. The audit qualifies the unsupported memory multiplier and blanket private-class and link-loss claims.
Validation
Eight suites pass 708 tests, with zero failures or skipped tests. They cover equality, proxy revert, ordinary Effects, disposal, metadata, callback profiles, and actual React hooks.
The evidence record identifies the executed source-alias configuration for installed dependencies. Targeted TypeScript, ESLint, oracle lint, formatting, and whitespace checks pass.
The authorized pnpm size:compare reports 0 bytes gzip for the typical app and +6 bytes gzip for the Effects app. The DB package adds 1 byte gzip against merge base bea84cd45. Other app scenarios remain unchanged.
✅ Checklist
Targeted tests pass with at most two workers and installed Vitest 3.2.4.
Targeted TypeScript, ESLint, oracle lint, formatting, and whitespace checks pass.
Extended core and React oracles ran RED before production edits. Hostile checks reject original and adjacent wrong designs.
Existing equality laws, assertions, reach requirements, and budgets remain intact. The maintainer explicitly retired the new Set work guards with that scope.
Local pnpm size:compare completed, including its normal package builds.
Full pnpm test and full repository builds remain unrun.
Remote CI and review remain pending for 87000e96f. Whole-PR readiness is not assessed.
🚀 Release Impact
This change affects published @tanstack/db code and includes a patch changeset.
This change is docs/CI/dev-only (no release).
Refs #2171. This addresses deferred P09 within the stated boundary. Other recorded runtime, retention, metadata, and public-type findings remain open. The maintainer authorized a normal squash merge after all current-head checks pass and new review findings receive evaluation.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Corrected Effect query callbacks so rows entering or leaving results are reported accurately, including during left-join startup and coalesced changes.
Ordered Effects now report updates only when a row’s value changes and include its previous value. Unordered Effects continue to report updates when a row remains present, even if its projected value compares equal.
Improved callback consistency across single-source queries, joins, and unions, including functional projections.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.

Walkthrough
The Effect runner now uses prior result membership to classify deltas. Unordered Effects track keys and preserve update notifications; ordered repairs retain prior row values. New core and React oracle tests cover callback delivery, metadata, and membership histories. Documentation records test evidence and scope limits.

Summary
Classify deltas against prior result membership packages/db/src/query/effect.ts, .changeset/fix-effect-left-join-startup.md, docs/guides/live-queries.md
The runner tracks membership for unordered Effects and prior values for ordered repairs. Unordered updates remain notifications when rows are present before and after a batch; ordered repairs emit updates when values differ. The changeset and guide describe these behaviors.
Model callback delivery histories packages/db/tests/query/effect-callback-oracle.ts, packages/react-db/tests/effect-callback-oracle.test.tsx
The shared callback oracle models delivery across payload representations, callback profiles, and suppression settings. Core and React tests run the histories and check delivery and reachability.
Validate metadata and membership deltas packages/db/tests/query/virtual-row-fields-effect-oracle.test.ts, packages/db/package.json
The oracle checks callback ledgers, metadata, key intervals, and membership across query histories. The test:oracles script now runs this suite.
Record repair evidence and scope docs/contributing/oracle-coverage.md, docs/contributing/oracle-reviews/*, .changeset/fix-effect-left-join-startup.md
The records describe the repair, oracle results, checker calibration, and scope limits. They also document the decision to exclude Set performance work.
The previously identified test gap is fixed, and no actionable merge-blocking issue remains after normal checks.

Explanation
The title "fix(db): classify Effect deltas from result membership" matches the main change in the changeset. The raw summary and PR description both describe classifying Effect enter, update, and exit deltas from preceding result membership in packages/db/src/query/effect.ts, and the title names that change and its scope (db). It is specific enough for a teammate scanning history to understand the primary change, and it does not describe anything absent from the changeset.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the repository template. It has the Changes section with motivation, the Oracle Coverage section with law, reach, RED/GREEN results, mutant evidence, and limits for a bug fix, the Checklist, and the Release Impact section with a changeset noted. The Oracle Coverage section names the coverage-map owner and gives the evidence the template asks for. Some items remain unchecked (full pnpm test and full repository builds were not run, and remote CI is pending), and the checklist's first item is left unchecked. These are stated openly. The description is detailed and mostly complete, and it is dense with references, which makes it harder to scan.

Each row aggregates the 14.4 scale/index/write-mode configurations of that query; per-configuration tables below.
Runner: node v24.8.0, linux 7.0.0-1017-azure, AMD EPYC 7763 64-Core Processor. Timings on shared CI runners are noisy; treat small deltas as indicative only.
The key-collision and key-change controls do not test the opaque key interval law.
Both faults change key only in hostile.batches. hostile.named keeps the original keys. The named and batch event keys agree judgment therefore fails first, and checkEffectDelta throws for that reason alone. The controls would still pass if the opaque key interval judgment were deleted. The comment at Line 726 says these controls reject wrong histories, so they should isolate the law they name.
Apply the same key change to the matching hostile.named entry. Both channels then agree, and only the interval check can reject the history.
Proposed fix
- if (fault === `key-collision`) second.key = first.key- if (fault === `key-change`) first.key = `different-opaque-key`+ if (fault === `key-collision`) {+ second.key = first.key+ hostile.named[1]!.key = first.key+ }+ if (fault === `key-change`) {+ first.key = `different-opaque-key`+ hostile.named[0]!.key = first.key+ }
Check that hostile.named[i] matches hostile.batches[0][i]. events() builds both arrays from the same batch, so the order is the same.

Track presence only when updates are not observed.
publishedRows retains a full row for every current result row. For an unordered Effect with only onEnter or onExit, observesUpdates is false, so the row is not needed for update comparison or publication. This can retain large projected or joined row objects for the Effect lifetime.
Use presence-only tracking for this mode. deleteValue supplies the prior value for exit classification because D2 retractions carry the value being removed. Keep full values when onUpdate or onBatch is configured.
