fix(security): fixed public MCP JSON-RPC errors + server-side logging with request id (code-scanning #2-#9) - #242
Addresses code-scanning alerts 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 (py/stack-trace-exposure) in gateway/app/routers/mcp.py. Clients receive fixed public messages; exception detail is logged server-side with a request id (X-Request-ID if well-formed, else uuid4) returned in error.data.request_id. Structured data (receipts, as_error_data, retry codes) preserved. New tests: gateway/tests/test_mcp_error_exposure_alerts_2_9.py. MCP/partner/AWI suites: 864 passed, 26 skipped. Alerts not dismissed. Note: HTTP /mcp/tools/{id}/invoke still returns str(exc) (outside these alerts; follow-up).
Note
Medium Risk
Changes the client-visible MCP error contract (no more str(exc) or tool-specific text); SDKs that parsed exception messages may need updates, though stable reason codes are preserved.
Overview Stops leaking raw exception text on MCP JSON-RPC (/mcp/messages) and REST tool invoke (/mcp/tools/{id}/invoke). Responses now use canned public messages (stable refusal/reason codes where they are contract, generic labels otherwise); full exception text is logged server-side only.
Adds centralized helpers (_public_jsonrpc_message, _public_jsonrpc_error, _log_rest_error) plus correlation ids: validated X-Request-ID or a generated hex id in error.data / REST detail.request_id. ToolExecutionError always maps to tool_execution_failed so tool output cannot mimic denial codes; refusal messages are stripped to the bare code (e.g. permit_forbidden_field without field suffix on the wire). Log lines escape control characters and cap length to reduce log injection.
Extensive test updates and new test_mcp_error_exposure_alerts_2_9.py; replay tests compare errors ignoring per-call request_id where idempotency requires identical semantics.

The /mcp/messages and REST invoke routes now return canned public messages for covered errors. They validate or generate request IDs, include them in applicable error data, and log exception details with those IDs. The routes retain applicable error codes, receipts, approval data, and other response details. Tests cover sanitized responses, logging, request-ID handling, and replay comparisons that exclude per-call request IDs.
Most MCP responses are sanitized, but REST invocation still leaks tool-specific error details and diagnostic logs can be forged with control characters; resolve both before merging.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 0be0a
The changes reduce public exception disclosure while preserving the inspected authorization and recovery contracts. The remaining concern is diagnostic-log integrity: newly logged exception text is not encoded by the application's plain-text logging fallback. Some security verification remains incomplete.
Retained concerns
Low · security · inferred: New classified-error paths pass exception text directly into diagnostic log records. Exception producers interpolate tool names, and the application's plain-text logging fallback does not escape record delimiters. This broadens the paths through which caller- or tool-originated text could spoof diagnostic lines when line-oriented logging is used. Request-ID validation protects the header value, not the exception text. Existing unclassified logging already has this weakness; downstream exploitation depends on input validation and deployed log formatting.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The identified new concern affects gateway diagnostic-log integrity, not demonstrated execution authority or ledger ownership. The inspected sinks write to the MCP module's logger; production collection, cross-tenant aggregation, and downstream interpretation of those records were not established.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
observed — The canonical security assessment contains no retained findings and leaves candidate_13abd3cad1039d3aac227ddbe2115159 deferred for lack of an exact-reference verification receipt. Its inspected response branch is sanitized, but that observation does not resolve the recorded verification gap or establish complete coverage.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Public-message controls and correlation-header validation do not encode the exception passed to the server logger. The JSON renderer configured for the separate structured logger does not establish escaping for the MCP standard-library logger; the application's fallback formatter is plain text.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Apply record-safe encoding to exception messages and tracebacks at the diagnostic logging boundary, and confirm that deployed collectors preserve that framing. Keep correlation IDs diagnostic rather than treating client-selected IDs as authenticated identity.

The REST handler returns detail=message for ValueError("Tool not found: ...") and Tool not executable cases. This exposes exception-specific text instead of the fixed public messages used by _public_jsonrpc_message.

Update the REST ValueError handling that calls _log_rest_error to return fixed
public messages for “Tool not found” and “Tool not executable” cases instead of
exposing exception text; for other ValueErrors, use _public_jsonrpc_message with
the invalid-params code. Preserve the existing HTTP status codes and logging
behavior.

Code-scanning alerts #2–#9 (py/stack-trace-exposure) in routers/mcp.py: JSON-RPC errors now return fixed public messages plus error.data.request_id. The detail is logged server-side, and X-Request-ID is used only when it is well-formed. Structured receipts and retry codes are kept.
Tests: the new test_mcp_error_exposure_alerts_2_9.py, plus updated assertions across the MCP suites. Local: 6090 passed, 103 skipped. CI: all green, BEHIND main, mergeable.
Follow-up, not blocking: HTTP /mcp/tools/{id}/invoke still returns str(exc), as the author notes. Remaining str(exc) sites (for example the reason= values near lines 1158 and 3022) should be checked in the follow-up for client exposure. The alerts are not dismissed, so CodeQL should close them after merge.

Codex read-only review of #242 at 0498b3a. Blocking:
gateway/app/routers/mcp.py:4994 (and fallback at :5001): REST invoke route still returns raw ValueError text in detail (e.g. "Tool not found: ") instead of logger.exception + request id + generic message.
gateway/app/routers/mcp.py:526: permit_forbidden_field exception suffix still reaches the client verbatim; test_mcp_error_exposure_alerts_2_9.py:445 asserts that leak.
gateway/tests/test_mcp_error_exposure_alerts_2_9.py:212: hardcoded invented request ids (req-fixed-242-000N), receipt id and reason values; use uuid4/runtime values.
quote_invalid added to the public reason allowlist (mcp.py:442) with a parameterized test (test_mcp_error_exposure_alerts_2_9.py:500). Lookup is an exact match; arbitrary exception text still maps to the generic internal_error (test at :314).
The three error logs now use %r. CI is green. There is no DCO workflow or check on this repo, so the unsigned merge commit 0498b3a does not block.
Still blocking:
CWE-117: logger.exception is kept at mcp.py:559, :576 and :834, so the traceback still writes the raw multi-line exception text and %r alone doesn't close the injection. Use logger.error without exc_info, or sanitize the traceback.
Client exposure (unchanged from the previous review): the REST invoke route still returns raw ValueError text in detail at mcp.py:4995, :4998 and :5001, and the permit_forbidden_field suffix still reaches the client verbatim at mcp.py:525.
Invented test data (unchanged): hardcoded request ids req-fixed-242-000N and a fixed sentinel at test_mcp_error_exposure_alerts_2_9.py:212. Use uuid4/runtime values.
…ng clients
Replace logger.exception with logger.error (request id, exception type,
sanitized capped %r message, no traceback) to close CWE-117. Return fixed
messages for invoke_tool ValueError paths and permit_forbidden_field.
Generate test request ids at runtime.

Delta from our PASS at 0498b3a. Two own commits (ee98dfe, e832569) sanitize MCP error logs with repr formatting (CWE-117), allow the quote_invalid reason, and stop raw error text from reaching clients.
Non-blocking: one open Codex P2 thread at mcp.py:448 asks to keep the fixed quote reasons (quote_expired, quote_not_found and so on) in the public allowlist. The author should resolve or answer it before merge.
