feat(coroot): give agents read-only MCP access with a Viewer service account - #5881
The maintainer wants the agents to use the platform's own services through the agentic-engineering plugin. Coroot has a built-in MCP endpoint, but agents can't reach it today: the whole Coroot host sits behind oauth2-proxy's browser SSO, which an agent can't complete.
What
Viewer service account. The Coroot resource gets an agentic-engineer service account with the Viewer role. The operator generates its API key into the coroot-mcp-agent Secret when that Secret is missing, so no key is committed. A Viewer can read topology, alerts, incidents, traces, metrics and logs, but cannot resolve alerts.
Direct /mcp route. The Coroot HTTPRoute sends exactly /mcp from the Gateway to the coroot-coroot Service. Every other path still goes through oauth2-proxy.
Gateway policy. A new CiliumNetworkPolicy, allow-gateway-to-coroot-mcp, admits Gateway traffic on port 8080 to the Coroot app pod only, not to the rest of observability.
Why bypassing the proxy for /mcp is safe
Coroot runs with authAnonymousRole: Admin because oauth2-proxy guards the UI. The MCP endpoint never uses that role. Coroot's handler (api/mcp.go, v1.28.1) answers 401 unless the request carries a bearer token, either an OAuth token or a service-account API key. Every tool call is then checked against that identity's role. So the direct route exposes only what a valid key's role allows.
Coroot's OAuth discovery and consent pages stay behind SSO, so only a signed-in person can obtain an OAuth token.
Session pinning and residual risk
Prod runs two Coroot pods, and Coroot keeps each MCP session in the memory of the pod that opened it. /mcp therefore goes to a coroot-mcp Service that selects coroot-coroot-0 only. While that pod restarts MCP is unavailable, and clients open a new session afterwards. The UI keeps both pods.
test-coroot-api-key-contract.sh now fails if any route rule other than Exact /mcp reaches Coroot directly, if that rule is not backed by coroot-mcp, or if any service account is not a Viewer.
Residual risk: any user API key created in the Coroot UI is now usable on /mcp from the internet, including Admin-role keys, because the anonymous Admin UI can mint keys for the built-in admin user. Only signed-in SSO users reach that UI. Do not create UI API keys other than the operator-managed Viewer key.
The scripts/capture-openbao-replacement/README.md table change is the MegaLinter bot's formatting fix (40030e3), not part of this change.
Validation
ksail workload validate and ksail --config ksail.prod.yaml workload validate pass: 772 files, including controllers/coroot and infrastructure/coroot.
The pinned naming gate passes.
Every scripts/tests/test-coroot-*.sh, route and network-policy test passes, except test-coroot-dns-resolution.sh, which needs Docker locally.
Operator chart 0.10.6 ships coroot-operator 1.10.6, whose serviceAccounts[].apiKeys[].keySecret creates the Secret. Coroot v1.28.1 reads auth.serviceAccounts and accepts API keys on /mcp.
After deployment, I'll verify that /mcp answers 401 without a key, that it lists tools with the Viewer key, and that resolve_alerts is refused.
…account
Coroot's /mcp endpoint authenticates every request itself: a bearer OAuth
token or a service-account API key, never the anonymous role the UI uses
behind oauth2-proxy, and every tool call is checked against that
identity's role. Agents cannot complete browser SSO, so they could not
reach it.
Add an agentic-engineer service account with the Viewer role, whose API
key the operator generates into the coroot-mcp-agent Secret, so the key
is never committed. A Viewer can read topology, alerts, incidents,
traces, metrics and logs but cannot resolve alerts. Route exactly /mcp
from the Gateway to Coroot, keeping every other path behind oauth2-proxy,
and admit Gateway traffic to the Coroot app pod only.

Walkthrough
The changes add a Coroot Viewer account for MCP access and configure secret-triggered reloads for its API key. Exact /mcp requests route to a dedicated Coroot service on port 8080, which selects only coroot-coroot-0. A Cilium network policy permits ingress-entity traffic to that port. Other paths continue to use the existing oauth2-proxy backend. Tests check the route, service selector, Viewer role, API key reference, and reload annotation.
The MCP route, Secret reload, and Gateway policy have no identified merge-blocking issue. The change is ready for normal validation.

The operator hands the coroot-mcp-agent key to Coroot through an env var,
which is read only at start, so a rotated key would stay unusable until a
restart. Add the Secret to the existing Reloader annotation.

The reservation-refresh regression pins Coroot's credential reloads so a
sizing refresh cannot drop one. The reload list now deliberately also
names coroot-mcp-agent; pin the new list.

Coroot keeps each MCP session in the memory of the pod that opened it, so
with two prod replicas follow-up requests landing on the other pod failed
with 404 "Invalid session ID". Route /mcp to a coroot-mcp Service that
selects coroot-coroot-0 only, and guard in the API key contract test that
Exact /mcp is the only rule reaching Coroot directly and that every service
account is a Viewer.

CodeRabbit: reviewed the previous head 50e0e1c with "No actionable comments", then was rate limited at this head at 2026-11-07T11:17:06Z, until 12:04Z.
Codex: usage limit since 2026-11-07T11:06:52Z.
Cursor Bugbot: usage limit since 2026-11-07T11:08:44Z.
The only change since CodeRabbit's clean head is one # shellcheck disable=SC2016 comment in scripts/tests/test-coroot-api-key-contract.sh. It marks $ns as a jq variable, which is what made the 🧪 Validate Manifests step fail. shellcheck is clean and the test passes.
An independent reviewer checked the whole change against Coroot v1.28.1, operator 1.10.6 and mcp-go v0.45.0. It confirmed that /mcp never uses the anonymous Admin role and that a Viewer cannot run resolve_alerts. Its P1, MCP sessions breaking across the two prod replicas, is fixed by the coroot-mcp Service that pins coroot-coroot-0. Its test nit is fixed too: the contract test now fails if any route rule other than Exact /mcp reaches Coroot, or if any service account is not a Viewer. A negative check showed it catches a catch-all route to Coroot and a PathPrefix /. The residual risk of UI-minted API keys is stated in the PR body.
Ready at cbdd94b2f006059bdb480fc3bb402292e4ff09d1: CI is green, there are no unresolved threads or other review findings, the PR is up to date with main, and the green review is self@cbdd94b2f006059bdb480fc3bb402292e4ff09d1 (CodeRabbit was clean at 50e0e1c, then rate-limited; Codex and Bugbot are at their usage limits). After the prod deploy I'll check that /mcp returns 401 without a key, lists tools with the Viewer key, keeps a session across two calls, and refuses resolve_alerts.

Why
The maintainer wants the agents to use the platform's own services through the
agentic-engineeringplugin. Coroot has a built-in MCP endpoint, but agents can't reach it today: the whole Coroot host sits behind oauth2-proxy's browser SSO, which an agent can't complete. What
Corootresource gets anagentic-engineerservice account with the Viewer role. The operator generates its API key into thecoroot-mcp-agentSecret when that Secret is missing, so no key is committed. A Viewer can read topology, alerts, incidents, traces, metrics and logs, but cannot resolve alerts./mcproute. The Coroot HTTPRoute sends exactly/mcpfrom the Gateway to thecoroot-corootService. Every other path still goes through oauth2-proxy.allow-gateway-to-coroot-mcp, admits Gateway traffic on port 8080 to the Coroot app pod only, not to the rest ofobservability. Why bypassing the proxy for
/mcpis safeCoroot runs with
authAnonymousRole: Adminbecause oauth2-proxy guards the UI. The MCP endpoint never uses that role. Coroot's handler (api/mcp.go, v1.28.1) answers401unless the request carries a bearer token, either an OAuth token or a service-account API key. Every tool call is then checked against that identity's role. So the direct route exposes only what a valid key's role allows.Coroot's OAuth discovery and consent pages stay behind SSO, so only a signed-in person can obtain an OAuth token.
Session pinning and residual risk
/mcptherefore goes to acoroot-mcpService that selectscoroot-coroot-0only. While that pod restarts MCP is unavailable, and clients open a new session afterwards. The UI keeps both pods.test-coroot-api-key-contract.shnow fails if any route rule other thanExact /mcpreaches Coroot directly, if that rule is not backed bycoroot-mcp, or if any service account is not a Viewer./mcpfrom the internet, including Admin-role keys, because the anonymous Admin UI can mint keys for the built-inadminuser. Only signed-in SSO users reach that UI. Do not create UI API keys other than the operator-managed Viewer key.scripts/capture-openbao-replacement/README.mdtable change is the MegaLinter bot's formatting fix (40030e3), not part of this change.Validation
ksail workload validateandksail --config ksail.prod.yaml workload validatepass: 772 files, includingcontrollers/corootandinfrastructure/coroot.scripts/tests/test-coroot-*.sh, route and network-policy test passes, excepttest-coroot-dns-resolution.sh, which needs Docker locally.serviceAccounts[].apiKeys[].keySecretcreates the Secret. Coroot v1.28.1 readsauth.serviceAccountsand accepts API keys on/mcp./mcpanswers401without a key, that it lists tools with the Viewer key, and thatresolve_alertsis refused.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
