Summary

Delivery 4 of #699 (requirements 7 and 10): use saved connections in the add dialogs and explicitly keep endpoints connected by hand.

Builds on #708, now merged into main. Merge commit 37d653e brings in current main, including #710’s Windows context-menu test fix, and resolves the overlapping changes while preserving the dialog integration in a4302b9.

  • Add saved-connection selection to Add From Service (including Catalogue/CSW), Add From Database, STAC Search and S3. STAC uses its existing API/catalog combo.
  • Track connection identity by id, never by address. Connections sharing an endpoint remain distinct; typing the same address by hand can still create another connection.
  • Offer Save as Connection only after a successful connection/listing and only when the dialog is not on a saved connection. Saving selects the new connection and hides the button. Nothing is saved automatically, and passwords/keys are never persisted.
  • Preserve identity when opening a connection or dataset with Add With Options…. ArcGIS directory browsing keeps the root endpoint; database/STAC saves use the endpoint whose listing landed.
  • Replace S3's legacy Remember checkbox/buttons and preference writes with named connections, retaining the one-time legacy import.
  • Align the Database saved picker with the existing form grid, and update the user guide. No new engine commands or dependencies.

Testing

Rechecked after merging current main in 37d653e:

  • cargo test -p rustgis-ui-egui --test smoke -- add_ stac_dialog_keeps connections_ — 9 passed, including the legacy preference-import regression.
  • cargo xtask ci — formatting, Clippy (-D warnings), workspace tests and layering passed; includes S3 reconnect/typed-key isolation and connection-id regressions.
  • CC_wasm32_unknown_unknown=/opt/homebrew/opt/llvm/bin/clang AR_wasm32_unknown_unknown=/opt/homebrew/opt/llvm/bin/llvm-ar cargo build --target wasm32-unknown-unknown -p rustgis-web — passed.
  • Inspected headless screenshots of the dialogs, Database picker alignment, live Terrestris WMS save, and Add With Options. Desktop Terrestris WMS Connect/Save/Pick also exercised. Author reports manual verification complete.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Save named connections for S3, service, database, STAC, and CSW sources, then select them from the relevant dialogs.
    • S3 connections retain their name, endpoint, region, and credential source without saving access keys. Database and catalogue connections can be saved after a successful listing.
    • Connection selection is preserved when editing an endpoint, and errors are shown when saving fails.
  • Changes
    • The S3 dialog now uses named connections instead of its legacy remembered-connection list.
  • Documentation
    • Updated the data guide with connection-saving and reuse instructions.

…pengeos#699)

Expanding a saved connection in Data Sources › Connections lists its datasets a level at a
time, with Refresh, an inline error and Retry/Log In…. Click selects, double-click adds,
Add Selected adds each as its own undo step, Add With Options… opens the kind's dialog.

New engine command connection.browse (probe/answer, like connection.test) for all 13
kinds, so the CLI and the assistant can browse too; user-only for plugins.
… a bar

The Add Selected / Clear Selection bar shifted the list when the first dataset was picked,
which also moved the row between the two clicks of a double-click. They are now entries in a
dataset's right-click menu; a double-click adds that dataset.
- a dataset without an add (grouped OGC API features) can't be selected or double-clicked,
  and has no Add entry: it keeps Add With Options…
- a CSW download link too long to follow is left out (and the list says it is truncated);
  the name and title kept with it are cut at 200 characters
- connection.browse refuses an answer larger than a service document may be (64 MB)
- the engine test runs the add a browsed WCS coverage lists
…r its assets

A static catalog or collection now lists its item links as nodes next to its child
catalogs; opening an item reads its own file and lists the assets that can be added.
- an asset's key names its item, so the same file under two items is two rows (selection and
  fold state no longer collide)
- the documents of a browse count against the same size limit as its answer
- the probe's S3 login is documented in the command's parameters

📝 Walkthrough

The UI now uses shared saved connections in service, database, CSW, STAC, and S3 dialogs. Users can select saved connections and explicitly save eligible connection details. The changes add UI and assistant tests and update the data guide.

Changes: Saved Connection Workflows

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shared selection and connection opening
crates/ui-egui/src/connectionui.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/connectiontree.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/sourcespane.rs
Shared helpers filter, select, and save connections. Successful opens record the selected connection ID. Tests cover connection identity and address matching.
Service and database dialogs
crates/ui-egui/src/dialogs.rs, crates/ui-egui/tests/smoke.rs, docs/user-guide/data.md
The dialogs offer saved connections. Saving is available after the relevant service or database conditions are met. Smoke tests cover selection, explicit saving, and address edits.
CSW and STAC connections
crates/ui-egui/src/cswui.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/stacui.rs, crates/ui-egui/tests/smoke.rs
CSW and STAC dialogs can save catalogue addresses and select saved connections. STAC selection clears the current catalogue browsing state. Smoke tests cover saving and reuse.
S3 connection lifecycle
crates/ui-egui/src/s3ui.rs, docs/user-guide/data.md
The S3 dialog uses the shared connection list and can save an active connection definition. Selecting a saved connection clears typed keys. Tests and documentation cover the updated flow.
Assistant connection-operation approval test
crates/assistant/src/tests.rs
A test checks fresh approval requirements for S3 browse, test, and login operations, including calls in scripts.

In the S3 dialog, editing a saved connection's endpoint or options after connecting can hide the Save as Connection button. This is a minor, recoverable UI gap that is worth fixing, and it does not block merging.

connection.browse reads the network here without a caller's answer (and opens a database connection in database). It isn't in tiles::NETWORK, which lists the other commands that fetch (s3.list, stac.collections, catalog.search). It is in the plugin NEVER list, but the assistant's approval gate for network commands may not cover it. connection.test is also absent from NETWORK, so this may be deliberate. Please check that the assistant still asks for approval before browsing. Confidence: low-medium.

Checked the approval path and added regression coverage in fbc45f7; no classification change is needed.

connection.browse, connection.test and connection.login are already in cmd::plugins::NEVER. The in-app assistant's tools::gate checks user_only before consulting reaches/tiles::NETWORK, and approval_key returns None for these commands. Agent::drain stops at Step::Confirm before execution, so each call requires fresh approval even when the user previously requested “allow for this conversation”.

The new connection_commands_require_fresh_approval_before_login_or_scripts regression exercises all three commands as direct calls and inside scripts. It uses offline S3 probes with observable session-login side effects: pending/declined calls leave the registry disconnected, an approved call executes, script lines before the connection operation also wait, and repeating an approved call asks again. The user guide now explicitly documents probe approval and the lack of conversation-wide grants.

The targeted regression, nine connection UI smoke tests, cargo xtask ci, and the wasm rustgis-web build pass.

Code review

I reviewed the engine side of this PR: the new connection.browse command, its registration, and the layer.rs helper. I did not read the egui files or the diff past line 600. That covers connectiontree.rs, connectionui.rs, serviceui.rs, s3ui.rs, stacui.rs, catalog.rs, the tests.rs and smoke.rs additions, and the docs. The review is partial. I posted one inline comment and found nothing else I'm confident about.

Bugs

  • None found in the engine code I read. The result limits, node validation, and wasm gating look consistent.

Security

  • Assistant approval (low-medium confidence). connection.browse downloads over the network and opens database connections. It is not in tiles::NETWORK, which lists the other fetching commands. It is in the plugin NEVER list. connection.test is also absent from NETWORK, so this may be intentional. Please confirm the assistant still asks for approval before browsing. See the inline comment.
  • Link checks (positive). Node URLs that come from remote documents go through address::check against the connection's address. Input sizes are capped (MAX_NODE, MAX_CHILDREN, answer and documents length).

Performance

  • Nothing notable. Lists are truncated to MAX_CHILDREN.

Quality

  • connection.browse carries a long inline params string. That matches the neighbouring commands, so it is only a style note.

AGENTS.md

  • No unwrap, expect or panic! in the new engine code.
  • The database path is gated for wasm.
  • I did not verify tl! use in the UI files.
  • The PR adds a hostile_params_never_panic-style entry for connection.browse, but I did not check its parameters.

Code review

I read the full diff and the surrounding context for the picker/save flow. I could not build or run tests here, so compile status and runtime behaviour rest on the PR's stated CI results.

Bugs

No definite bugs found. Two low-confidence concerns, neither blocking:

  • Possible borrow-check error (confidence: low, about 15%). s3ui.rs calls crate::connectionui::keep(app, def.clone()) while def borrows from app.ui.s3.connected. Whether this compiles depends on two-phase borrows. The PR reports clippy and tests passing, so this is probably fine. If it fails, clone def into a local before the call.
  • Stale connection id across dialogs (confidence: low). dialogs.connection and dialogs.listed are shared by Add From Service, Add From Database and CSW. Stale ids are neutralised because picked() also requires the address to match. The shared state is still fragile if another dialog is added to it later. Resetting it when a dialog opens would be sturdier.

Security

  • No issues found. I checked these:
    • keep sends the address through connection.new, which strips and redacts secrets and reports stripped.
    • S3 fill clears key/secret/connected when a saved connection is picked, so secrets don't carry over. A regression test covers this.
    • picked compares the redacted address, so the secret is not part of identity matching.
    • The legacy s3_connections preference is now only read, never written.

Performance

  • No issues found. connections_snapshot is cached by generation and returns an Arc. picked is a linear scan over a small list, run once per frame.

Quality

  • Unrelated reformatting (confidence: high, nit). In stacui.rs the Asked::Token { … } variant is collapsed to one line, unrelated to the feature. In connectiontree.rs the "table" arm is reformatted as part of a real change, which is fine.
  • Notification order in connectionui::keep (confidence: medium, nit). keep posts "Saved as the connection …" before it checks that connection.new returned an id. The missing-id case would still notify success and then return Err. Move the notification after the id check.
  • Duplicated early-return pattern (confidence: low, nit). The Add Service and Add Database dialogs both run the picked connection through open_connection, set dialogs.error on failure, and return false. A small helper would remove the duplication.
  • Unlabelled fallback (confidence: low, nit). kind == "auto" is mapped to "service" inline in dialogs.rs. A comment would help explain why.

AGENTS.md

  • No unwrap/expect/panic in non-test code. The new unwrap() calls in s3ui.rs are inside #[cfg(test)], which is fine.
  • Translations. New user-visible strings use tl!/i18n::fmt. The catalog .tsv files need no update.
  • Layering and wasm. No new dependencies, and no egui use below L6. The std::time rule is not touched.
  • Commands. No new engine commands were added, and the dialogs still go through connection.new and connection.login.
  • Tests. Regression tests were added in smoke.rs and as unit tests, covering S3 secret isolation and connection-id identity.

Minor (confidence ~50%): current only matches when the form's name still equals the picked connection's name. If the user picks a saved connection, then edits the name box and reconnects under the new name, current becomes None and Save as Connection is offered for what is effectively a copy of the saved endpoint. That's arguably intended (a new name = a new connection), but the "Rename it to save it" hint is only shown on case-insensitive name collisions, so the behaviour is hard to discover. Consider a short test pinning the intended behaviour.

This is intentional: S3 session connections are keyed by name. Picking a saved connection, changing the form to a different name, and pressing Connect registers a new session connection; it does not rename or edit the original saved definition. Save as Connection then keeps that new connection, even when its endpoint matches the original. The original saved id/name remain unchanged.

The collision hint is deliberately limited to names already used case-insensitively, because saved names must be unique. A distinct name is the supported way to keep another S3 connection to the same endpoint.

I have not added the suggested rename-and-reconnect UI regression in this patch; that additional coverage is deferred. The existing S3 tests cover explicit save/reconnect and typed-key isolation, not this copy path. No behavior change is needed for this finding.

Code review

I found no blocking problems in this change. I read the diff and the surrounding source. I did not build the code or run the tests.

Bugs

  • Low (about 50% confidence), s3ui.rs:284: The picked S3 connection only counts as current while the form's name still matches the saved name. If the user picks a saved connection, edits the name and reconnects, Save as Connection is offered for what is effectively a copy. This is probably intended. The "Rename it to save it" hint only appears on a name collision, so the behaviour is hard to discover. A test that pins it would help.
  • Low (about 30% confidence), connectiontree.rs: The "table" arm and the service arm set app.dialogs.connection after the source is opened. If that open doesn't show an add dialog, the id stays set. This is harmless: picked() also checks that the address still matches, so a stale id can't select the wrong connection.

Security

  • Nothing found. Saved connections never hold passwords or keys: keep goes through connection.new and shows the "stripped" notice. S3 keys are cleared from the form on pick and on connect. picked() redacts the address before comparing.

Performance

  • Nothing notable. The connection list comes from a cached snapshot keyed by generation, and the new per-frame work is small.

Quality

  • Pulling out stripped_notice, switch_api and picker/picker_combo removes duplication.
  • The legacy s3_connections preference is now read only by the one-time import. The SAVED doc comment says so.
  • The new tests cover the main cases: identity versus address, the S3 secret-isolation regression, and keeping and picking in the service, database and STAC dialogs.
  • Low confidence: add_database computes database(&app.dialogs.a) on every frame in several places. A single local would be tidier.

AGENTS.md

  • No unwrap, expect or panic in non-test code. The ones in the diff are in tests.
  • Interface text goes through tl! and i18n::fmt.
  • Nothing was added below L6 that depends on egui. The pure logic stays in ui-egui, and there are no new dependencies or assets.
  • The user guide is updated.
  • No cfg(wasm) problems were visible. open_connection still returns the desktop-only error for database kinds on wasm.

Addressed the latest review in fbc45f7:

  • Notification ordering: connectionui::keep now extracts and validates the returned connection id before emitting either notice, then returns Ok(id). This avoids reporting success before the result has been checked.
  • Automatic kind: added a comment explaining that auto is the dialog's detection mode and service is the corresponding saved-connection kind.
  • Assistant approval: added a focused regression covering browse/test/login through direct and scripted calls, including pending/declined side effects and fresh confirmation after an earlier approval. Classification is unchanged; the existing user-only gate already enforces it. Also clarified this in the user guide and replied to the older inline approval comment.

The remaining suggestions do not need code changes:

  • Stale dialog fields: Dialogs::open already replaces the full struct with Dialogs::default(), resetting both connection and listed before the saved id is attached after a successful open.
  • S3 borrow concern: the existing call compiles and passes Clippy/tests; no extra clone or temporary is needed.
  • Asked::Token layout: the one-line variant is produced by rustfmt (also checked via stdin); retaining it keeps the required formatting gate clean.
  • Picker error-handling helper: kept the two short call sites local rather than introducing another helper for this duplication.

Verification after these changes: the new approval regression and all nine connection UI smoke tests pass; cargo xtask ci (formatting, Clippy, workspace tests, layers) and the wasm rustgis-web build pass.

Test robustness (confidence ~50%): the mock server blocks in listener.incoming().take(3), and the test ends with server.join().unwrap(). If the app makes fewer than three requests (a cached or deduplicated listing, a changed flow), the thread never finishes and the test hangs instead of failing. The same applies to the single accept() in the STAC test. Consider a non-blocking accept with a deadline, or dropping the join and letting the thread detach. The unwrap()s on I/O inside the thread also turn a client-side timeout into an opaque join panic.

Code review

This PR adds "Saved connection" pickers and "Save as Connection" buttons to the Add From Service, Add From Database, S3 and STAC dialogs. It replaces the S3 dialog's own "Remember" preference with the shared connections store. It also adds an assistant test that connection commands need a fresh approval. I read the diff only; I did not build or run the tests.

Bugs

  • No definite bugs found. Connection identity is checked by id plus the unchanged, redacted address (picked). Secrets are cleared when a connection is picked (s3ui::fill). connection.new strips passwords from addresses. These all hold up against the cases I tried.
  • Low confidence (~25%): dialogs.connection is one id shared by several dialogs. Only the address check in picked stops a stale id from showing the wrong connection as selected. That check is sound today, but it is easy to break later.

Security

  • No issues found. Secrets are not persisted. The legacy s3_connections preference is now read-only. The new assistant test covers fresh approval for connection.browse, connection.test and connection.login, called directly and from scripts.

Quality

  • Test robustness, confidence ~50% (inline comment on crates/ui-egui/tests/smoke.rs): the mock HTTP servers block in incoming().take(3) or accept(), and the test then calls server.join(). A change in request count would hang the test instead of failing it.
  • Nit: stacui.rs reformats the Asked::Token { … } variant onto one line. That is unrelated to this PR and adds diff noise.

AGENTS.md

  • No violations found in the diff. There is no new unwrap, expect or panic in non-test code, and the new UI strings use tl! and i18n::fmt. I did not check unwrap use in the new tests against the crate's lint config.

🟡 Minor · Include the effective S3 definition when computing current. · connectionui.rs:50-53

crates/ui-egui/src/connectionui.rs:50-53
🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Include the effective S3 definition when computing current.

The S3 picker matches only the connection kind, ID, and name. After a successful connection, changing the endpoint, region, credential source, or profile leaves current set. The current.is_none() guard then hides Save as Connection for the edited definition.

Compare the normalized S3 fields before treating the saved connection as unchanged.

🐛 Suggested fix
     let list = crate::sourcespane::connections_snapshot(app);
     let st = &app.ui.s3;
-    let current = list.iter().find(|c| c.kind == "s3" && Some(c.id.as_str()) == st.connection.as_deref() && c.name == st.name.trim());
+    let profile = if st.profile.trim().is_empty() { "default" } else { st.profile.trim() };
+    let current = list.iter().find(|c| c.kind == "s3" && Some(c.id.as_str()) == st.connection.as_deref() && c.name == st.name.trim()).filter(|c| {
+        c.address == st.endpoint.trim()
+            && c.options.get("region").map(String::as_str).unwrap_or_default() == st.region.trim()
+            && c.options.get("credentials").map(String::as_str).unwrap_or("none") == st.source.as_str()
+            && (st.source.as_str() != "profile"
+                || c.options.get("profile").map(String::as_str).unwrap_or("default") == profile)
+    });

Update the S3 picker’s current-connection matching so a saved connection is
considered unchanged only when its normalized endpoint, region, credential
source, and applicable profile also match the active S3 definition; preserve the
existing kind, ID, and name checks.
