Transient chain: one-lobe fit for single sources - #141
Base: the template-variance PR #140; merge after it. This is the chain half of the one-lobe fit (#113 is the xFit half); the flux-tail term follows in a separate residual-background change, and the acceptance rules follow in the kernel-mismatch position draft.
Summary
New worker step 8b (uq.single_source_fit, between the dipole fit and the budget): every candidate whose quality flags leave exactly one lobe unsupported is refit with the one-lobe model, with the same solver, weights and mask as the dipole fit. A brightening source (NEGATIVE_LOBE_UNSUPPORTED alone) starts at the dipole's positive lobe with sign +1, a fading one (POSITIVE_LOBE_UNSUPPORTED alone) at its negative lobe with sign -1; the lobe is circular at xfit.psf_sigma_px (or the stars' width) when one is known, elliptical otherwise. Where the fit's covariance is valid the row gets the new column fit_model = "single" and its positive_x, positive_y, positive_*_err_fit and positive_xy_cov are the one-lobe values, so for a fading source they describe the measured negative lobe. The budget builds the corr, kfit and mis terms at that position with the lobe weights it already uses (the PSF-derivative-weighted sum divided by the one-lobe flux), and psf_flux is measured there. With a variance plane but no PSF width, the one-lobe fit's signed flux and fit-only error fill psf_flux, psf_flux_err_fit and psf_flux_err on those rows. These stand-ins do not enter the additional flux budget, so rows without a stand-in keep their position-based validity. A single source whose one-lobe fit is invalid keeps the dipole values and fit_model = "dipole"; every other row is untouched, and the dipole parameter columns (x_pos, x_neg, ...) still describe both lobes of the dipole fit. Without a variance plane nothing is refit: the dipole covariance is then scaled by its reduced chi-square and the two fits would not be comparable. summary.json records uq.single_candidates, uq.single_fitted, uq.single_fallback and uq.single_model (circular, elliptical, or null when refitting was not attempted).
Why: on repeated noise realizations of a synthetic single-source stamp the dipole fit's position interval is too wide and one fit in five does not converge, while the one-lobe fit's interval is the right size (the measurements are in #113). The mis entry of the README says which lobe lambda^2 scales under each fit_model.
SingleSourceResult holds the refit's positions, errors, covariance, flux and the per-row replaced flags; single_sources(flags) selects the candidates; the catalog schema gains fit_model as the last column of the uncertainty block (after psf_flux_err, before source_x) and the psf_flux descriptions change accordingly.
API changes after review
None in the first range; the review fixes for the one-lobe fit went to #113 (canonical widths, start width) and to the kernel-mismatch position draft (acceptance rules, uq.single_fallback_reasons).
Second review round: the psf_flux stand-in choice and the supported-lobe selection are pure functions (uq.psf_flux_inputs, uq.supported_lobe_xy) with host tests; the worker calls them.
Third pass: six appended catalog columns source_x, source_y, source_x_err_fit, source_y_err_fit, source_x_err, source_y_err carry the measured lobe whichever sign (positive_* by default, including brightening rows without an applied refit; accepted one-lobe fits describe the measured lobe of either sign; a fading row with no applied one-lobe result takes the mirrored position with NaN bars), so a reader stops branching on fit_model, and repeat_catalogs.py scores them as "source position (either lobe)" including fading singles. uq.single_source_refit (default true) switches step 8b, and uq.enabled: false skips it too.
The reviewer's commits preserve accepted single-source measurements in the repeat tests (a row with fit_model = "single" is classed as single or fading even where the dipole fit's own flags were invalid or failed, since the one-lobe covariance was valid), make older catalogs without the source_* columns readable, sign the fading-source stand-in flux, keep missing photometry from invalidating unrelated rows, and, in a separate commit, state the scope of the single-source uncertainty estimates in the README: it keeps the identifiability guidance and omits unqualified empirical coverage figures, with the covariance limitation stated on its own.
Validation
examples/transient-chain/tests: 106 passed (101 on the base branch). ruff check and ruff format --check clean on the stack head that contains this branch.
GPU (one workstation GPU, CuPy 14.1): at the reviewed head examples/transient-chain/tests 149 passed. The reviewer's restack passed 176 example tests at this stage.
Four new tests in tests/test_uq.py: single sources take the one-lobe fit (positions, errors and fit_model replaced, other rows untouched, the fading source's columns describing the negative lobe); an invalid one-lobe fit falls back to the dipole values; the step needs a variance plane and single flags (nothing refit otherwise, summary counts right); the budget builds its terms at the single rows' position and uses their flux. tests/test_repeat.py passes the new column through the synthetic catalogs.
Synthetic truth: the coverage and spread of the one-lobe fit against the dipole fit are measured in xFit: one-lobe Gaussian fit with calibrated position covariance #113 on synthetic stamps; those numbers do not transfer to survey data without the acceptance rules of the later draft.
Not run here: survey data with this step alone; the 12-pair survey rerun ran the full stack.

Acceptance rules for the one-lobe fit (right sign, inside the stamp, near the start) are in the kernel-mismatch position draft, not here.

Walkthrough
The transient-chain worker now supports optional one-lobe refitting for candidates with exactly one unsupported dipole lobe. The catalog records the fit model, measured-source position, and PSF flux. Repeat-catalog scoring includes measured-source positions for fading candidates.
The UQ schema adds the boolean single_source_refit option, enabled by default. Catalog definitions add fit_model and source_* columns and document their meanings and ordering.
One-lobe fitting and uncertainty inputs examples/transient-chain/transient_chain/uq.py, examples/transient-chain/tests/test_uq.py
The UQ code refits eligible candidates with one unsupported lobe. Valid fits update measured-lobe positions, covariance, and flux; invalid fits retain dipole values. Selected flux and position inputs feed the error budget. Tests cover refit behavior, fallbacks, flux inputs, and budget calculations.
Worker integration and catalog output examples/transient-chain/transient_chain/worker.py
The worker invokes single-source fitting, builds uncertainty-budget inputs, combines diagnostics, and writes fit-model, PSF-flux, and source-position values to the catalog.
Repeat-catalog scoring adds a source-position quantity for fading candidates. It uses positive-position uncertainty terms and recognizes single-fit rows when classifying candidates.

Distinguish a skipped refit from an invalid refit.
fit_model remains "dipole" when refit is false or variance is absent. For fading rows, source_position_columns() also derives source_* from the dipole negative lobe whenever applied is false. The current wording describes these cases only as an invalid one-lobe fit. Document “no valid one-lobe result was applied,” including disabled, no-variance, and invalid cases. Please review the documentation correction at f7bb0fd: source coordinates take positive_* by default, with mirrored coordinates and NaN errors only for fading rows without an applied refit; one-lobe flux fallback requires a variance plane and no PSF width. The README, helper docstring, six schema descriptions and PR description now agree. Executable calculations, column order and types are unchanged; hooks and source-equivalence checks passed. The restack only inherits current main’s existing build repair.

Base: the template-variance PR #140; merge after it. This is the chain half of the one-lobe fit (#113 is the xFit half); the flux-tail term follows in a separate residual-background change, and the acceptance rules follow in the kernel-mismatch position draft.
Summary
New worker step 8b (
uq.single_source_fit, between the dipole fit and the budget): every candidate whose quality flags leave exactly one lobe unsupported is refit with the one-lobe model, with the same solver, weights and mask as the dipole fit. A brightening source (NEGATIVE_LOBE_UNSUPPORTEDalone) starts at the dipole's positive lobe with sign+1, a fading one (POSITIVE_LOBE_UNSUPPORTEDalone) at its negative lobe with sign-1; the lobe is circular atxfit.psf_sigma_px(or the stars' width) when one is known, elliptical otherwise. Where the fit's covariance is valid the row gets the new columnfit_model = "single"and itspositive_x,positive_y,positive_*_err_fitandpositive_xy_covare the one-lobe values, so for a fading source they describe the measured negative lobe. The budget builds thecorr, kfitandmisterms at that position with the lobe weights it already uses (the PSF-derivative-weighted sum divided by the one-lobe flux), andpsf_fluxis measured there. With a variance plane but no PSF width, the one-lobe fit's signed flux and fit-only error fillpsf_flux,psf_flux_err_fitandpsf_flux_erron those rows. These stand-ins do not enter the additional flux budget, so rows without a stand-in keep their position-based validity. A single source whose one-lobe fit is invalid keeps the dipole values andfit_model = "dipole"; every other row is untouched, and the dipole parameter columns (x_pos,x_neg, ...) still describe both lobes of the dipole fit. Without a variance plane nothing is refit: the dipole covariance is then scaled by its reduced chi-square and the two fits would not be comparable.summary.jsonrecordsuq.single_candidates,uq.single_fitted,uq.single_fallbackanduq.single_model(circular,elliptical, ornullwhen refitting was not attempted). Why: on repeated noise realizations of a synthetic single-source stamp the dipole fit's position interval is too wide and one fit in five does not converge, while the one-lobe fit's interval is the right size (the measurements are in #113). The
misentry of the README says which lobelambda^2scales under eachfit_model.SingleSourceResultholds the refit's positions, errors, covariance, flux and the per-rowreplacedflags;single_sources(flags)selects the candidates; the catalog schema gainsfit_modelas the last column of the uncertainty block (afterpsf_flux_err, beforesource_x) and thepsf_fluxdescriptions change accordingly.API changes after review

fit_model = "single"is classed as single or fading even where the dipole fit's own flags were invalid or failed, since the one-lobe covariance was valid), make older catalogs without thesource_*columns readable, sign the fading-source stand-in flux, keep missing photometry from invalidating unrelated rows, and, in a separate commit, state the scope of the single-source uncertainty estimates in the README: it keeps the identifiability guidance and omits unqualified empirical coverage figures, with the covariance limitation stated on its own.Validation
